I seriously don’t get how Sci-Fi CGI shitfests spectacles like this get greenlight anymore. It must be money laundering. Jupiter Ascending, Valerian, Wrinkle In Time. Did no one fucking learn from John Carter?
They always hire some unlikeable leads, some non-actors, singers, talk show hosts, models. Throws in a couple of great actors but in very minor roles. Wastes millions in excessive CGI and a mcguffin storyline with plans to make sequels and/or cinematic universes. It always fails.

The problem is in how a studio greenlit an adaptation before having anyone in place who gave a shit about the source material. Then with the case of john carter and a wrinkle in time, it wasn't possible for anyone to even give a shit about the source material. As a wrinkle in time is baby's first mindblowing (which isn't possible to do on screen) and john carter is proto-fiction, notable only in how so many people have knocked it off (and improved upon it) in the last century.
With jupter ascending it was warner brothers wanting to make sci-fi twilight. With valerian it was entirely shit casting and poor writing.
Its not easy to make a movie when people give a shit about the movie. It gets harder the less people care and all but impossible with studio interference.

John Carter was good, it's just that no one knew what it was all about so they didn't bother going to see it.
Jupiter Ascending was a cheesy movie aimed at teenage girls like Twilight, but was odd enough that I doubt many went. Valerian had some decent work put into it, but failed at having anything that attractive about the story to draw in audiences.
Wrinkle In Time is just sorta sad. It was based on a novel that tons of kids liked, but they decided to update it by shoving in black people and making it out to be more of a feminist story with its talk of warriors which wasn't even in the novel.
