I would recommend Mr. Pickles. It’s a great, slice-of-life show about the adventures of a disabled boy and his dog in their quiet home town. It’s really heartwarming and relates to the average childhood dream. There’s only one tear-jerker in season 1, but it is resolved (I don’t want to spoil it since it’s one of the pinnacle moments of the show).

Though if it's lighthearted you want, the new series has less darker tones than the original.
