I like his work and American Pop is my favorite

Tiny bit overated. The main reason he's brought up is the fact his cartoons are mature by American standards. Sad part is that no one really continued from where he left off to make more theatrical movies for adults.

I LOVE Hey Good Lookin', I have the soundtrack on my phone, so good.

Fritz the Cat sucked desu

Go to bed, Crumb

Shut the fuck up and leave this board if you're not going to discuss comics and cartoons.

Loved LotR as a kid and before the Jackson movies came out I would watch pic related and the Rankin / Bass movies on repeat.

Bakshi's LotR is a piece of shit but I love it

I almost confused him with Don Bluth when I saw this thread, but quickly remembered Bluth had talent.

All that fucking rotoscope and just straight up actors. Also Sam being a fat dumb piece of shit.

I feel like Wizards was a great idea executed horribly. The writing and character designs sucked.

What?????

Anyways my favorite one is Fire and Ice.

No point in asking Sup Forums
They never saw any of his movies or the Mighty Mouse revival

Have some behind the scenes for your good taste.

...

Wizards is my favorite

>Bakshi is the genius behind Spider-Man 1967 season 2 & 3

That alone is enough to make him a god in my books. If you got some drugs at hand or something, then I can't recommend enough watching this shit right here:

his eyes are smaller than most asian people wtf

He's Jewish. They have squinty eyes.

He could have been amazing if he ever bothered with actual writers. Hidden in Fire & Ice is an epic film about a barbarian, a princess and a god who team up to stop an evil sorcerer from conquering the world. Instead we got a cool but disjointed mess.

Probably the biggest stylistic influence on myself (or tied with Tomm Moore). His style varies a shitton across works but he has this one zone that's like a grittier Disney, and although he doesn't shy away from real world shit he does it in a way that isn't preachy or obnoxious, or rather the obnoxiousness it has works within the framework he creates.

>Hidden in Fire & Ice is an epic film about a barbarian, a princess and a god who team up to stop an evil sorcerer from conquering the world. Instead we got a cool but disjointed mess.
I thought Fire and Ice had a decent fantasy world setting, but you're right the script could have used a lot of work.

>What do you think of his work?
He's a real inspiration and I love that one interview he did on how he and his friends got started.
>What is your favorite film of his?
Toss between Coonskin and Hey Good Lookin'

>mfw where you goin NOW?!

I find Cool World strangely appealing. I don't think it's a good movie by any stretch, but the look and feel of the world is pretty unique.

I thought it was neat just from a visual perspective, excellent example of the capabilities of rotoscoping

Oh, neato

I think Bakshi is kind of a hack.

I say "kind of" because he certainly meant well and history is indebted to him as the only adult animator in the west who kept on trying to make it for years, but he never had the real talent to effectively pull off many of his undertakings.

((I'm not counting Cool World, which though an abyssmal mess, wasn't his fault as he was practically held at gunpoint to make a film the producers fucked up beyond all reason. That ain't his fault.))

Fire and Ice had scripting problems and I personally regard his LotR film as a giant rip off that only gets maybe a small handful of scenes right or appealling (which Peter Jackson then ripped off. Bakshi just can't catch a break) and in general his films tend to have this ...sleazy vibe which just makes it seem like the content is a dirty joke that's going on for too long.

As an animator... I'm not sure how else to describe it but it always felt like he just does not get or comprehend the economy of animation. He focuses way too long on boring shots of a rotoscoped actor wandering lazily across the screen or Gandalf gesturing like a madman to a hobbit in greater detail, but then action scenes are done choppy, poorly in comparison and the camera always focuses on the wrong kinds of shots for too long. Rarely, if ever does he get grand sweeping images right, it's always like he's pointing the camera just shy of where it ought to be,

So.... yeah. The guy certainly *tried*, but I don't think he ever quite hit the mark.

I'm a Bakshi fanboy and I agree with some of what you said

I mean, look at it - when decided what to cut they got rid of the bit explaining that Darkwolf was both a god and Nekron's father and they kept the lesbian witch and her retard son because ???

I can agree with this.

When you look at the "good" stuff we have today regarding cinema, you can usually trace it back to the first few instances of that "good" thing. Bakshi's work feels like one of those first few instances, but no one ran with it. Like said

Look up some interviews/Q&A from Ralph Bakshi. The economy of his animation is that he was working with less than a shoe string budget more often than not. As such pencil tests were never allowed. You can find these video on YouTube, and there is this video on Vimeo where he is being interviewed alongside Don Bluth.

I need to re-watch the stuff I have copies of and see if any others have gotten releases since I last checked.

I love his Fritz movie. It was pretty rad.
I personally think he should have done straight animated porn more often.

He ruined action cartoons by setting off the creator-driven revolution.

I've consided Fire and Ice something like animated Beastmaster. They both stupid, violent fun but it could've been better.

Wish theyd release some of the soundtracks from the movies. Especially Coonskin.

This is a great description. I think he has some awesome visuals in some of his movies that probably only exist because of rotoscoping(those walking scenes come to mind), but at some point it just starts feeling cheap.
I'm glad we have him as an adult American animator, but I cant help but wonder what it would be like if someone else had taken his place, would we have more variable mature animation?

I wonder if milton knight is part of that. As an aside, I'm not sure if he did any actual work on holli or not.

Here is a weird one that always pops out to me. Even if it is just tracing, the movement looks good in a way only rotoscoping can do, even if a whole movie made with just rotoscoping gets offputting in my opinion.

One day, I'll come onto Sup Forums, and find a thread saying Sergio Aragones has died.

That will be a sad day.

Ha ha! Good one, user!

I like the one with the gratuitous nudity and sex. You know, the one with that one chick with large tits who throws herself at that one guy who's a loser. You know, that one.

With any luck, he'll at least do one more run of Sergio Aragones

Time to go see if I'm dreaming or if there is a real chance

Wizards is my favorite but fuck if some of the voice acting isn't godawful. A special nod to protoBender for really phoning it in.

Nekron is my husbando and I shelled out about 200 bucks for a film cell, so Bakshi has a special place in my heart.
