No, your timeline is off. the Alt Right moniker was in use at least around the summer of 2015. I remember telling my history professor about them last year, since he had never heard of it. I think it was a pretty grass roots, very loosely organized group of people who don't even share all that much in common ideologically, but who are all very fed up with political correctness, transvestism, anti-intellectualism in universities, and the left in general. They also reject other contemporary right wing politics, and refuse to allow snarl words like racist or sexist to dissuade them.
So Richard Spencer was part of that movement, but by no means the only one. Nor even the leading one. What's special about him is twofold. He is willing to talk to the media when many of the others are not. RamZPaul, for instance, only agrees to interviews where he can record everything that's said and upload it to youtube. Reporters hate that because they can't slander him. Paul Joseph Watson won't return reporters calls. Mike Cernovich won't either when they call him (a lot won't). The second thing Spencer has is that the media like him because it allows them to demonize the rest of the alt right and paint them as Nazis. Someone like Jared Taylor is just far more reasonable, so their slander games don't work. Spencer's just the right amount of Nazi to scare people, but just not Nazi enough to be banned from papers.
Oh, and Spencer is loving it. He's eating up the attention. probably cultivating it, really, since he thinks it's his meal ticket.
But I think the media would have found a way to make people think the alt right are Nazis no matter what, so I'm not mad about his dumb antics. On the other hand, it probably is the death of the nascent political movement, since normies won't listen now.
