>Sophisticated imaging of 1,000 cannabis users' brains found all of them had widespread restrictions or build-ups of blood flow.
>Many had abnormal blood levels in areas affected by Alzheimer's disease, such as the hippocampus.
>The findings, published in the latest Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, are an ominous warning as the United States rapidly embraces recreational and medical marijuana legalization.
this article doesn't detail whether or not the researchers considered the impact permanent.
I haven't smoked for years but did heavily during my teenage years and early adulthood.

Yeah, but how much daily consumption are we talking here? Why are journalists of all stripes so inept at reporting on science accurately in layman's terms?

Sounds like a chicken or egg debate to me. Maybe they like to smoke pot because they have poor blood flow in the brain.

Binge drinkers and alcoholics with multiple detoxifications have impairments in executive control tasks sensitive to dysfunction of prefrontal cortex. Animal studies show that repeated withdrawals are associated with an inability to learn new information. The mechanims of neurotoxicity and kindling of neurotransmission systems is due to alcohol's acute effects on GABAergic enhancement and NMDA suppression, leading to CNS depression leading to a partial acute tolerance to these effects, followed by a rebound effect, during acute withdrawal due to the partial tolerance that developed. The acute withdrawal/rebound causes the neurotransmission systems to go into a hyper-excitability state; if this hyper-excitability state occurs multiple times, kindling and possible neurotoxicity can occur. There is evidence that excitotoxicity may also occur as a result of repeated withdrawals. Similar to people who have been detoxified multiple times from alcohol, binge drinkers show a higher rate of emotional disturbance.[3] >Most chemicals fuck with your brain.

m8 you're fine. You'd be surprised how little oxygen humans utilise in each breath they take from the total amount of oxygen inhaled. Low blood flow only really poses a threat in diabetics or those with aortic/pulmonic/mitral or atrioventricular stenosis.

So what? Freedom includes the right to do things that adversely effect you health. Like tobacco and fast food.

it's a moot point to compare weed and alcohol, and it's an overworked point, too.
Let's assess the merits and demerits of weed by itself.
Merits: 1000000000 Demerits: 0*
*Maybe 1 or 2 demerits but we are far from sure

drugs are bad, news at 11. it's only pot smokers that push the narrative pot is a health food.

I quit smoking weed but not because the health effects. If I were to continue, I'd be vaporizing it or something. I never smoked an obscene amount to worry about long term effects.
I quit because I got what I wanted out of it and kept getting diminishing returns where it wasn't even interesting anymore. Whenever I'd hang out with my smoking friends, I'd find myself just asking why I even got high in the first place. It was usually because the social situtation and I hadn't done it in a while...but the effects started becoming the same...it was just not interesting to me anymore. It was just chorelike. "Well I don't do this a lot anymore, let me remind myself what it's like...oh yeah it's not interesting".
Smoke all you want. That's what freedom (MURICA) is all about, but word of advice, don't do so if you have shit to do in the moment and smoke only when you have recreational time set aside. Same should apply to drinking.
Wyatt Nelson
>word of advice, don't smoke if you have shit to do in the moment WELL, aren't you soooome sort of idiot!!!

It would impair your brains ability to function. The brain 'redirects' blood to the area of the brain that's most involved in whatever task you are doing (e.g more blood will go to the temporal lobe if you are doing something that involves deep language comprehension).

This is pretty fucking stupid for several reasons >how much is "significantly" less blood flow? >do the patients use any other drugs (other illicits, tobacco, alcohol, etc.)? >is this reduced blood flow proven to be detrimental enough to the brain to warrant a complete prohibition of pot? >what are the patients individual histories? >tons of other unindentified factors not even mentioned
This isn't a study. It's a survey. It doesn't prove anything other than what we already know. They shouldn't reach conclusions or imply pot is a dangerous drug just because a brain correlates with the same blood flow found in Alzheimer's. There needs to to be concrete proof that there are major cognitive deficiencies because of marijuana use and nothing else.
And until they find that evidence, people are going to continue to smoke weed because it doesn't harm them or affect their daily lives, and most likely haven't met anybody that has been so damaged by weed that they can't do what they did before weed.
Can't believe anti-pot propaganda/hysteria still gets media coverage. People have already figured out its nothing worse than alcohol or tobacco, and it has way more pros than cons.
Legalization is coming no matter if you like it or not, and when half the population suffers because of a weed epidemic, than you can tell me I'm wrong. But it's not going to happen.
People don't want to legalize pot not because it's dangerous, but because a lot of interest groups will lose tons of income.
Isaac Rodriguez
we cannot know this; it's not been studied. Those are some causes of reduced blood flow, they're not the be-all and end-all of undiscovered causes of cerebral hypoperfusion.
hey medfag. it's not clear how much the blood flow is decreased and it's not clear under what conditions the decreases occurs. besides, what is the baseline?
Now, it's an entirely different issue whether the brain is receiving any amount of diminished nutrients, fresh blood, or other.
If the effects of the reduced blood flow were significant, perhaps symptoms would already be present. I mean, some people smoke a TON of pot, with wax on top.
Furthermore, the mechanism of action casuing bloodflow to decrease is unclear. Is it related to a lower heart rate, ie relaxation? Is it because pot smokers are more relaxed and are in better cardiovascular condition?
the article, as it stands, is worthless.

I disagree. Various organs, especially the brain due to its high metabolic demand, need a relatively constant blood flow and thus has an extremely small capacity for change in blood flow.
>You'd be surprised how little oxygen humans utilise in each breath they take from the total amount of oxygen inhaled The oxygen extraction in the brain is like 60ml/L, so its pretty high.
Camden Gonzalez
haha fuck weedheads, literal retards

the daily mail article is stupid, read the actual study content.iospress.com/articles/journal-of-alzheimers-disease/jad160833 you're right, the study doesn't amount to showing any cognitive deficits it shows reduced blood flow, particularly to the hippocampus it is a study, it is not a survey what conclusions we can draw beyond "there is reduced blood supply" are non-existent but "reduced blood supply" is, in itself, a huge deal, because no chronic changes to the brain associated with marijuana use had ever been shown prior to this study
Gabriel Davis

Yeah I agree for what its worth now its baseless, more research must be done.
>If the effects of the reduced blood flow were significant, perhaps symptoms would already be present I'd say decreased cognition is an obvious symptom if we were to assume the lack of blood flow is detrimental.
>Furthermore, the mechanism of action casuing bloodflow to decrease is unclear. Is it related to a lower heart rate, ie relaxation? As I said in another post, even if your heart rate is low the brain has a very small capacity for change in blood flow to the brain.
Julian Nguyen

You do realize that most """"""""studies"""""""""' and """""""""""findings"""""""""""' are made by people who are paid by pharmaceutical companies to make cannabis seem worse than the pills they give to people?
funny that other studies I've seen claim that cannabis actually increases blood flow to parts of the body. nobody can be believed until it is fully decriminalized, and large scale INDEPENDENT studies emerge, until then, keep calling cannabis degenerate while you continue whatever degenerate vice you possess.
