Lenin was the one who floated the idea of the vanguard party. He said that workers could never create the change needed to bring about communism and so the vanguard had to lead them. Marxists could explain the USSR as a result of Lenin's flawed vanguard concept - trying to force communism in a world not ready for it yet.
However, it's important to remember that when Marx was writing a lot of the benefits of industrialisation hadn't materialised yet while the drawbacks were all too manifest. The European struggle for a pastoral dream remembered was being crushed under Victorian factories and workhouses and so on, living standards were in freefall, work hours were longer and family was often far away in the country. Marx - like many others - did not predict the surge in living standards that the industrial revolution eventually caused. If this had not eventuated there very well might have been communist revolution across Europe - clearly it resonated with some people, considering there actually was communist revolution all across Europe - Russia, Germany, France.

It's not real communism. It's liberalism with a social bent - humanised capitalism, so to speak. Marxism requires you believe in a single rational good: there is only one right way to live and it can be objectively proven to be correct (and this right way is obviously communism). Social democrats as far as I'm aware still believe in a plurality of goods - that we should be free to pursue our own good in our own way. They simply add a material element to liberalism - that true freedom requires material equality first. All mainstream politics is fundamentally liberal - it just varies based on how much material equality they think is necessary for true freedom.
But I know nothing about Kurt Schumacher so I could be wrong, I'm just remarking on social democrats generally.

I think there are broadly three problems with communism through history. 1. it occurs in shitholes This can't be underestimated. If you take a failing backward shithole country and change who's in charge the chances of the new leadership - even with the best possible plan - being able to unfuck the situation is low. We see this in Africa where the IMF and World Bank are trying to fix African countries with market reform. You can't really call their efforts successful even if you're a devoted capitalist, and it's probably not because the IMF and the World Bank are dumb. It's because it's hard to implement meaningful reform when 50% of the population can't read and 40% don't have access to clean water. Communism has historically come about through violent revolution, and those don't occur when everything is going fine. 2. it occurs violently This compounds problem 1. You get a shithole country turned into a war-ravaged shithole country led by a military government with no legitimacy that only controls half the territory. This was the case with the USSR, with China, with Korea, and so on. This predisposes the "vanguard party" to all kinds of undesirable things. 3. it does too much, too fast In the post-revolution chaos new communists have historically rushed through sweeping reforms that were barely understood and have ended disastrously. I don't really think this point needs elaborating - when you do a lot at once, you do it poorly.
So, I think to implement communism effectively it needs to avoid those three pitfalls. Firstly, the country needs to be moderately successful already. The change in government needs to occur basically overnight, in a brief but decisive coup - a schwerpunkt action. Lastly, the new government needs to move slowly and cautiously. It doesn't take much to ruin everything where the economy is concerned. Reforms should be modest but continual instead of all at once.
