These are two very interesting battles: On one side we have thousands of FSA fighters fighting 10K soldiers and militiamen with bad air support
on the other side there are thousands of ISIS fighters against 100K of more trained and equipped soldiers and militiamen with a huge air support
ISIS is somehow holding its positions in the city and even sometimes retaking lost areas.
FSA is literally collapsing.
BUT,
ISIS had the opportunity to retreat towards Syria and didn't. More weird: its "war minister" declared: "the shiite government will see what we have prepared for it once we repel the offensive on Mosul";
And the west won't let the FSA pocket in Aleppo collapse because it will start the battle of Idlib, which implies a total collapse of the FSA in Syria

Mosul will eventually fall, but ISIS will continue as an insurgency for many years to come because unlike FSA they have a long term plan on how they are going to do things.
They've been around for a decade, and wont be gone any time soon.
The rebellion will collapse (it has already failed) , except perhaps some hardliners like former al nusra and Jund Al Aqsa will survive and do insurgency.
It's somewhat likely many will defect to ISIS.
