Because he started in Objectivism. Anyone who has studied Objectivism seriously knows that doing so requires an immense amount of studying philosphy (metaphysics, epistemology, morality, politics, esthetics), history, economics, etc.
Moreover, doing so requires a conscious integration of all of this knowledge into a coherent understanding of the world.
