Because it happened during WWI. Not just because the war was a big news story, but because of wartime censorship in the belligerent nations. Germany, France, Britain were all suffering from the epidemic, but not allowed to talk about it. Spanish press was allowed to talk. Result: Spain gets blamed for it, 1918 flu epidemic is called Spanish Flu
