Funny thing, Angola made the same mistakes of Venezuela in terms of over reliance on oil, but you don't see headlines about its problems. Do you know why? Because its population was already impoverished and starving as all the money went to a handful of oligarchs, so nothing changed. In Venezuela, at least the people shared in the wealth while there was prosperity. That's not to say they didn't make stupid choices about diversification and didn't have corruption, but Venezuela's problems can hardly be blamed on "communism" as a concept.

It's because when they wandered Europe for 1000 years, usually they were banned from owning land or farms. Also, their religion didn't ban them from lending money, unlike Christianity. Thus they were pidgeonholed into careers such as moneylending and trade.
