Marxism has never worked applied to any system in history. Attempts at ushering in marxist ideologies on a structural level always inevitably lead to dictatorship of some kind.
Leftist economics are inherently flawed and the only way for them to be applied in any meaningful way is with expansive government control and the introduction of free enterprise aspects. For instance, Nazi Germany handled leftist economics well by coupling it with capitalist competition while also removing the newly generated leaches from society through force. No welfare state can exist without extensive protections against such parasites and no leftist economy will ever work alone.
The third way is the only way to even pretend leftist economics has a place in the real world. Capitalism however is a proven method that has worked for centuries. It isn't without it's flaws sure, such as consumerism being rampant and the production of decadent lifestyles because of that. Those flaws need to be checked, but even if they weren't a capitalist society would still be leagues ahead of a marxist/leftist one that tried competing at the same scale.

So, the end goal of Marxists is communism: a classless, stateless, moneyless society.
A state is an instrument of class oppression: it's an organisation, separate from society, that enforces the rule of said society's dominant class onto the others. It follows that a state can exist only in a class-society (the classes are the base of the society, they precede superstructures like the state). That is why we say that the state will wither away when the classes are gone.
Now how do classes disappear? Like I said, they form the base of the society. In other words, they correspond to the very concrete positions people can hold in the process of production. Capitalism is the most efficient mode of production to date; it features several classes, the main ones being the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. The latter, possessing nothing but its workforce, has to sell it to the former in order to survive; the former will make profit out of this workforce. The bourgeoisie is the dominant class in capitalism; it holds all the power, and so-called "democracies" are a mystification, an instrument of class control. The very nature of capitalism is to be a mode of production based on trade, which feudalism or antique slavery were not. This first allowed a wonderful socialisation, and thus expansion, of production, but now this expansion has become anarchic and limited by the internal contradictions of capitalism. The only way to solve these contradictions is to keep (and expand) the gains of capitalism (socialisation) while getting rid of what causes the contradictions (trade): the totality of the production must become the property of society as a whole. Once that is done, since everyone will hold the same position in the production process, there will be no more classes.
How to get rid of trade? I'll explore this another time.
