The Imperium actively hides the fact that Chaos even exists. An entire planet was sterilised and put into workcamps with new settlers being brought in all because the planet was attacked by Chaos, even the Guardsmen that were lucky to survive it were purged.
However the games, especially the Dawn of War series seems to contradict this, with Imperial Guard units actively fighting Chaos regularly.
