In my personal opinion, I think it's better to expose yourself to different view points from different people, but you need to be able to control your emotions well enough that you don't become ANGERED, DISGUSTED, OUTRAGED, or other type of uncontrollable emotional outburst. It's good to have an opinion on something one way or another, but don't be so narrow minded as to dismiss every different opinion without considering it at the very least. And always make sure you're open to changing your mind. Sticking with something you stop believing just because "you have to be right" usually leads to more conflict. And remember you can always just agree to disagree, or just not discuss whatever with somebody whom you'd rather not discuss it with.
Many people are predisposed to isolate themselves in their own heads. It's very good advice. Most people have a problem with admitting they "don't know" though. This isn't an issue just on pol or online either, but while everybody is entitled to their opinion, nobody wants to be told YOU'RE WRONG. And even fewer are willing to admit that they don't know enough about a topic or discussion and willing to stop and do more research. It usually ends with someone just giving in and agreeing with the other person who's yelling louder.
The problem is global though. Most people do not want to bother to put in the effort to learn and educate themselves on things that matter to them in their lives. And i don't just mean on whatever abstract push button "hot" topic is in the media, but things that ACTUALLY MATTER and affect them directly, in most cases the law and how it works.
This is where hug boxing vs intimidation can differ. When you're surrounded by people in person, there's more a factor of intimidation. Everybody else thinks this way, so i must follow. There's also many people who could sit through a "radical muslim" preaching and not bother to actually do anything criminal their entire lives, but then there are some who take it to heart and act on it. Usually in these cases, the rest of the group fails to notice these and then just cry NOT ALL MUSLIMS after someone from their mosque blows up.

This forms a composite opinion that's a little bit closer to the truth, although not as accurate as what you'd get if you were living in areas directly affected by refugees or race riots. "Counteracting that side effect" would erase any value this board has.
Sup Forums is an echo chamber. Only mass spammed noise gets accepted and circulated. Everything that breaks from the hivemind is shills or trolls and is quickly stomped out or discouraged.

A lot of it i think stems from a lack of outlets for people to voice their opinions online. Sure there's reddit, but aside from the big outlets like twitter and facebook, most forum sites have been shut down for a while now, most news sites have completely removed the ability to comment, or require registration sometimes needing a phone number for verification. People can't even post on rants and raves for their local craigslist board without a phone number anymore. The few media sites that still allow commenting now usually get so many comments that it's impossible to keep up with there too.
