For people in NYC. Does not apply outside of the five boroughs, but keep in mind FDNY comes down on businesses and buildings all the time like a ton of bricks. I legitimately think they're the most powerful city agency. We had a fire that killed a person and burnt down a whole apartment building just last month caused by a overloaded outlet, so yes FDNY treats fire code seriously.

Use social media to find locations and take pictures of potential hazards. A lot of these places are going to be in commercial/industrial areas or trendy gentrified areas. Think the South Bronx and Williamsburg/Bushwick.
