You get genetic diversity by keeping different pools of genes separated. When you put them together then the diversity is lost because there is only so much room for so many genes and different environments will favor different sets of genes. Basically, having each race be on their own private island is the best way to preserve genetic diversity. Maybe a little crossbreeding between the pools to spread the really good genes would be fine.
If a plague or something comes to wipe out one of the groups then it will probably not kill off the other groups but if everybody mixes with everybody else then the plague has a good chance of killing everybody.

Different ethnicities evolved because of specializing to particular environments. For example Inuits are short and squat and Maasai are tall and lanky because the first wants to minimize and the 2nd wants to maximize heat transfer.
