Saw or read an interesting commentary once. The nostalgia/throwback stuff is basically entertainment companies cashing in on the millennial disinclination to grow up. Guessing cartoons geared toward the crowd are an extension of this.

What's even more diabolical, as I recall, is that by creating memorable pop culture while they're young and playing up the nostalgia when they're of age while simultaneously making children's entertainment socially acceptable for adults, they're basically farming and harvesting entire generations of fanatical consumers.
