Up until about 100 years ago, throughout the west, the standard "AoC" was 12.
This wasn't changed\increased as a result of scientists, biologists, psychologists, etc coming together and determining that the appropriate age was much higher, it was in fact - in the US, UK, and Australia, entirely the result of activism by feminists (or in some cases you might call them proto-feminists), the VERY same women who were lobbying for such disastrous policies as Prohibition were the same ones lobbying for the AoC to be raised significantly. In many cases they were simply individual, hystrionic feminist women who were able to lobby a bunch of white-knights in government on their behalf.
If you read the STATED positions of these feminists, they believed in a doctrine literally called "female moral superiority", and they openly simply said that they were trying to stop prostitution and men should have to suffer imprisonment to achieve this end. The same women also interestingly lobbied for gender segregation in prisons, leading the way for the explosion in "sex crimes" legislation that targets men only, and sends them to a sausage factory where they can be forgotten.

arranged marriage was never all that popular with working classes. only the highborn and wealthy bothered with it, and even then it was usually only the oldest son.
I do think that marriages should seek family consensus and that men and women shouldn't be allowed to "date" in the modern sense of the word.
