There’s a clear pattern: Putin runs stealth efforts on behalf of politicians who rail against the European Union and want to push away from NATO. One of the important facts about Trump is his lack of creditworthiness. After his 2004 bankruptcy and his long streak of lawsuits, the big banks decided he wasn’t worth the effort. They’d rather not touch the self-proclaimed “king of debt.” This sent him chasing less conventional sources of cash. BuzzFeed has shown, for instance, his efforts to woo Muammar Qaddafi as an investor. Libyan money never did materialize. The money didn’t come directly. Hunting for partners with cash, he turned to a small upstart called the Bayrock Group, which would pull together massive real estate deals using the Trump name. Its chairman was a former Soviet official named Tevfik Arif, who made a small fortune running luxe hotels in Turkey. To run Bayrock’s operation, Arif hired Felix Satter, a Soviet-born, Brighton Beach–bred college dropout. Satter changed his name to Sater, likely to distance himself from the criminal activity that a name-check would easily turn up. As a young man, Sater served time for slashing a man’s face with a broken margarita glass in a barroom brawl. The Feds also busted him for a working in a stock brokerage tied to four different Mafia families, which made $40 million off fraudulent trades. One lawsuit would later describe “Satter’s proven history of using mob-like tactics to achieve his goals.” Another would note that he threatened a Trump investor with the prospect of the electrocution of his testicles, the amputation of his leg, and his corpse residing in the trunk of Sater’s car.
Let’s begin at the top. Trump’s campaign manager is a wizened operative named Paul Manafort. It’s true that Manafort is a mercenary by trade. His old Washington consulting firm pioneered the practice of representing the dictators of the world, no matter their grim record. (I profiled his authoritarian ambit earlier this year.) Late in his career, however, Manafort dedicated himself to working on behalf of clients close to the Kremlin. His grand achievement was reviving the doomed career of the anti-charismatic politician Viktor Yanukovych. Also on the list of advisers is Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, the former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency. In Politico, an anonymous Obama official harshly criticized Flynn: “It’s not usually to America’s benefit when our intelligence officers—current or former—seek refuge in Moscow.”
More recently, Richard Burt, a Reagan administration official, has begun advising Trump on foreign policy. His criticisms of NATO and pleas for greater cooperation with Putin grow from a deeply felt realism. Yet his ideological positions jibe with his financial interests. Burt is on the boards of Alfa-Bank, the largest commercial bank in Russia, and an investment fund with a large position in Gazprom.
Trump’s advisers have stakes in businesses where the health of the Russian state is the health of the firm—where, in fact, the state and the firm are deeply entangled. The campaign isn’t just one man with an aesthetic affinity for Putin and commercial interests in Russia; his sentiments are reinforced and amplified by an organization rife with financial ties to the Kremlin.

And this is critical to understand: There is reason for serious skepticism about whether the Republican Congress can be trusted to investigate this scandal. Their response to Donald Trump's copious and appalling financial conflicts of interest has essentially been, "eh, no biggie." That response is part of a broader pattern in which Republicans are effectively looking the other way while Trump assaults our norms and democracy, and given that, there's no reason to assume Republicans will investigate the allegations of Russian interference with the seriousness they deserve.
For the sake of completeness, here's a list of all the different strands that connect Donald Trump to Russia and the Kremlin. Some of these are relatively benign and others less so, some of them relate to the hacking scandal and some don't, but it's helpful to see them all together:

- As of now it is unknown whether Russian hackers also penetrated the systems of the Republican Party or Republican officials, or what they might have found and are now holding if they did.
- We now have reports that Vladimir Putin was personally involved in directing the hacking.
- Russian hackers, with the cooperation of at least some Americans, obtained private information on Democratic House candidates and released it in order to damage them.
- Roger Stone, a longtime friend and adviser to Trump, admitted in October that he had "back-channel communications" with Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, about the release of the hacked emails.
- Again and again, Trump has offered public praise for Vladimir Putin's leadership, his strength, and his popularity. "I will tell you that I think in terms of leadership, he's getting an A," Trump said.
- Trump has also defended Putin against charges that the Russian president has had his political enemies and critical journalists murdered, something that has been extensively documented. "It's never been proven that he's killed anybody," Trump claimed last December. "So, you know, you're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, at least in our country. He has not been proven that he's killed reporters."
- On one occasion Trump read to a rally a distorted version of a hacked John Podesta email which he apparently got from Sputnik News, a site created by the Russian government to disseminate propaganda.
- At the same time, Trump was denying that Russia had anything to do with the hacking and even denying that any hacking had taken place. "I notice, anytime anything wrong happens," he said during one of his debates with Clinton, "they like to say the Russians are — she doesn't know if it's the Russians doing the hacking. Maybe there is no hacking."
- Paul Manafort, who served as Trump's campaign manager, acted as an adviser to former Ukrainian prime minister and Putin ally Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Moscow in 2014 when Ukrainians revolted against his rule. After it was revealed that "Handwritten ledgers show $12.7 million in undisclosed cash payments designated for Mr. Manafort from Mr. Yanukovych's pro-Russian political party," Manafort left the campaign but continued to advise Trump informally.

It's been getting a little over the top with illustrating Russia as the villain, making those claims less credible, especially when there's other nations in Asia that have relatively worse issues.
What does Russia gain from "hacking the U.S. elections" in favor of Trump ? Prevention of war ? Peace ? In this case it seems that if the Russians made an effort in publishing and releasing hacked emails, revealing higher level corruption in the United States, people are prevented from electing an incredibly criminal, elitist, and corrupt politician, that likely would of started conflict on a grander scale.
If anything the true traitors are ones that willingly turn a blind eye to the allegations of the other side.
