These people are the bulk of smarter than average people, and so sway the average intelligence figure.

Good call. It seems like you have to accept a lot of convulusion to accept the liberal world view because a lot of it just doesn't intuitively make any sense. To most 18 year olds entering freshman year, hearing this worldview probably feels like taking a red pill of sorts - "everything you know is a lie, suspend your disbelief goyim". Semi-intelligent people stop here and think they've got it all figured out, and any time they are struck with a tinge of common sense they are shamed by their peers who accuse them of harboring a pathology/mental illness (ie Islamophobic or something).
It takes a genuinely curious mind, not to mention a pair of balls, to wonder why certain ideas that FEEL correct are always suppressed in an almost knee jerk reaction. And then you come full circle and embrace common sense once again, but through your education you've also become a genuinely knowledgeable person.

Here's 4 possible explanations:
1. These IQ studies are simply a reflection of researcher bias. No matter how perfect your research might appear to be, researcher bias almost always shines through[1], which is why psychology data isn't replicable 50% of the time.[2] Not to mention there's at least one or two studies that end up with the opposite finding.
2. The big survey used to make the claim that high IQ people are more likely to be liberal is a reflection of the environment more so than innate beliefs -- suppose most of the high IQ people are in college, where it's almost guaranteed their views will swing further left. If these people were interviewed in their 30s, they might be much more conservative, but they're interviewed in their radically liberal college hippie days.
3. This Time article notes that although high IQ individuals are more likely to say that they're liberal, that claim may not actually line up with their political beliefs.[3]
4. Maybe liberals are just smarter and this speculation is just wishful thinking. : ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Conservative policies are still more correct, at least for the time being.
