It's frankly a great city (because it's my hometown) but it has a massive car congestion problem. It's an enormous pain to move around with a car. The city is very flat and large as well(soft ground prevents any building from being too tall, so you have very few buildings).
Other than that it's close to the Ocean, has a direct high speed train to Paris and Toulouse (another major city) and doesn't get as much attention from shitskins as Marseilles or Paris.
Architecture is gorgeous tho. The only shame I have is that we used to have a cool looking dock neighborhood with some typical looking building that's being renovated with modern architecture.

You're right about villages and small towns. They are the best glimpses of what France used to be. Completely white, strong traditional values, conservatism everywhere, usually some beautiful architecture and landscapes. If there is one kind of place to live in France, that's it. France is not that big of a country, so you can still find such towns not far from bigger cities. Hell, even some towns around Paris still qualify, although probably not for much longer.

Conservative France is in the centre of France. Loir et Cher, Loiret all that shit. It's pretty rural though. No minorities except in the city of course but it's acceptable. Hot in the summer, Cold in the winter, castles, forests, swamps, hunting and mostly conservative values. Cost of life is not expensive and it's beautiful but you need to accept the weather and the fact that the countryside is dying, just like in the US. People are mostly nice, you have the equivalent of rednecks but also lots of rural bourgeois hunters living in big properties and you have of course a lot of average regular people in between. If you want something like cali then you have to go south but you will encounter a lot of arabs.
