Once a country is at war it's a matter of holding them off for enough time, and if Vietnam can hold off and retaliate mighty USA, then you can do that too.

In this regard I think the international community hasn't been helpful as much as they wanted, or intended to. China is huge and no one wants to disturb the status quo and in that the smaller countries are getting squashed.
USA is too far geographically, all they can do is power project from Japan and travel in international borders but what's scary is the military bases that China is creating. It's going to be interesting to see what happens later.
