my two cents from an Italian's point of view I'm not the religious type, it's been ages since I attended a mass, but every christmas I return to my parent's to have lunch together , why is that? because christmas is a family tradition above all, it's the yearly occasion in wich you gather to meet your relatives, otherwise scattered around the country, to have a good time, to eat some nice food, drink some wine and tell funny stories I look forward all year to this meeting, however formal it may be, not to celebrate some ancient rite, but to have the possibility to spend times with people in my life whom I care for in one way or another it's nice to be there, it's nice to eat together and have some laughs, maybe remembering the simpler times when we were kids together with my cousins, to see how my cousin's sons are grown over the year, maybe even exchange some gifts even if it's not strictly necessary I know, it may get cheeky, or even boring, but it' NICE to just be there year after year
