Bolivar fucked it by forcing centralization on us and Venezuela. We all wanted this to work but the local elites weren't willing to lose too much of their privileges and Bolivar was too proud to give in to the demands.
Either way we wouldn't have been a great power, just look at how horrendous our geography is. We've been isolated peoples living in mountain valleys for most of our history with very little productivity or infrastructure to speak of.

All countries were primarily agrarian up until the middle-19th century. And no, British capital didn't flee to the US. In fact, the Brits had a very strict no-technology-spread doctrine with regard to industrial tech at that point in time. The first textile mill in the US in Pawtucket, RI was built by a man who literally had to smuggle the blueprints out of Britain. Not to mention that the US had YUGEEE tariffs during the 19th century. It was one of the grievances that the South had against the industrializing North. Britain, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and the USA were never given the leg-up of outsourcing. They were the first to industrialize, period.

Latin America was a shithole and pretty much always has been except for a few exceptions around the turn of the 20th century. It's never been stable and its economy has always been more extractive than industrial. Sure, Latin America had too small of a population up until the early 1900s, but so didn't Canada and Australia, yet they didn't end up being complete shit holes, now did they?
