It goes back to feudal Europe. Communism as an idea stems from relieving of feudal leadership in favor of a community-based system. Communists see all capitalists as essentially feudal leaders that hold them from achieving equality. In a communists eyes, the USSR was actually a State Capitalist enterprise, because it was a state-mandated oppressor, not communism. In that sense it is sort of a system that is whatever they want it to be. See the writings of Proudhon on Marxists.org for examples of this lunacy. Marx was the first one to write grievances with the capitalist system, and proposed a state-communism. The Parisian commune is a good example of anarcho-communism, prior to Marx's state communism as an idea.
