The problem with this that it gives borderline homeless no incentive to fix their problem. If anybody can be a lazy fuck and get an apartment for free, cash assistance for free, and food stamps for free, clothes for free, etc. eventually nobody will exist to help fund those programs, then cue societal collapse.

It's not socialism, it's cost-benefit analysis. If someone costs the state $125,000/year in arrests, police and social worker time, and emergency room visits. It's much, much cheaper to assign them housing, a social worker and a primary care physician for perhaps $20,000 total, maybe 30. Utah recently eliminated homelessness for this reason.
Assuming you are a taxpayer, you are footing the bill either way. If you want to put ideology in front of facts, please do it somewhere I don't vote.

Came here to post this. The minute the start giving out free housing to the homeless you are going to have a radical increase in 'homeless'. It's exactly what happened with the migrant crisis in Europe.
