I am Austrian. Austrian gun laws are lax. There are two general categories for gun ownership (for guns requiring licenses) - 1. guns can only be used for certain purposes, but cannot be carried around, 2. guns can be concealed carried or openly carried.
1. Is for most people, for hunters, sport shooters etc., you an get handguns, rifles etc., you just need a background check and need to be 18. And I think some training for handguns.
2. Concealed carry or open carry is allowed only for people who have a reason to be more exposed to violence than the general public. Until the greens and socialist have recently tried to make the practice harder to get such a license, every taxi driver, doctor, lawyer, veterinarian, large land owner, politician, bodyguard, bouncer, truck driver etc. could get such a license. For the last 2 years it has been harder.
Then there are guns which do not need a license at all, e.g. single shot non-rifled long-guns. You just need to be 18 years old. Also small caliber guns (.22LR) are 18 years old only.
The police is just an extension of the government and as such needs to be culled alongside it.
