They are smart enough to do their jobs well, for the most part, and can be trained even in specialized fields, while remaining almost completely ignorant about the world at large, and they are extremely trusting and even gullible about what they see/hear/read from the media. The result is a society which is high on efficiency (though increasingly less so thanks to diversity) but very low on cultural knowledge or critical thinking.

I'm in a rural, isolated part of Canada that had a rich folk culture and where everyone used to "ceilidh", i.e. drop by each other's houses and play music and tell stories, but now it's just everyone sitting home with TV, internet, or videogames. The good thing is they will still chat with strangers in the stores and they will help you out in a fix (e.g. car stuck in the snow), so there's that.
They didn't ban anything, but the law required internet providers to keep a record of the websites you've been on for a year. The police need a warrant to ask for the records but its still much easier than it used to be and it fits the UK surveillance state stereotype.

Those are almost gone. St. Petersburg and Moscow during the winter are still beautiful though, especially in historical areas, but you must be able to deal with -15/-20 c to enjoy it.

There are some nice out of the way places in Russia but I'm not sure how easy they'd be to reach on a standard two-week trip. A place like Veliky Ustyug for example is really remote. Are the rural highways in Russia really as bad as I've heard? Is it difficult to rent a car?
