I got arrested in California for moving my gf out of the way when I was moving out.

Police are required to respond to calls. When the police come and you press assault charges against a specific individual, they are required to act. This goes not just for domestic violence but really any assault charge. Often if there's no direct evidence, they will just try to defuse the situation. "Oh, you don't look hurt, where did he hit you? I don't see anything."

If I call up the cops and point at some guy on the street and say "he pushed me onto the ground intentionally" they have to do something. They can harangue witnesses, they can tell me I'm being a baby, the guy can say it never happened, but if you push the issue and say "I WAS ASSAULTED BY THAT MAN, I AM PRESSING CHARGES". Unless you're a crack addict / hobo or someone with negative credibility, there's no way they can swing it. It's the law. That guy will go away in a police car.

The same works with women. When the police respond to a DV at someone's residence, more often than not, the woman will press charges. They can say "you guys can work it out, theres no evidence here" but if she says "he hit me, i'm pressing charges, give me a TPO" that's it. Done. Doesn't matter if there's not a scratch on her.
