>Danny, a 22-year-old who lives with his parents, has found little satisfaction in a series of part-time, low-wage jobs he’s held since earning an associate degree. But the video games he plays are a different story.
>“When I play a game, I know if I have a few hours I will be rewarded. With a job, it’s always been up in the air with the amount of work I put in and the reward.”
>He represents a group of video-game-loving Americans who, according to new research, may help explain one of the most alarming aspects of the nation’s economic recovery: an unusually large percentage of able-bodied men, particularly the young and less-educated, are either not working or not working full-time.
>Economists say that an additional reason many of these young men - who don't have college degrees -- are rejecting work is that they have a better alternative: living at home and enjoying video games. The decision may not even be completely conscious, but surveys suggest that young men are happier for it.
>While young men might temporarily enjoy a life of leisure, the implications could be troubling for them as well as the economy. The young men aren’t gaining job experience that will better equip them to work in their 30s and 40s. That could lead to a lifetime of decreased wages, limited opportunities and challenges such as depression and drug use — problems that the United States is already seeing in areas hit with heavy job losses.
>If a historically vibrant portion of the population doesn’t feel as much desire to work, this could harm the economy’s future and the ability of government to use policy to create jobs.
>A few decades ago, an unemployed person might be stuck on the couch watching TV, isolated and depressed. Today, cheap or free services such as Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube and Netflix provide seemingly endless entertainment options and an easy connection to the outside world. Video games, in particular, provide a strong community and a sense of achievement that, for some, real-world jobs lack. >Jacob Barry, a 21-year-old from Grosse Point, Mich., who works part-time making sandwiches at a Jimmy John’s and dreams of becoming a therapist, says the community — as well as a sense of escape — is what draws him to video games. After logging as many as 40 hours per week playing games, Barry realized that he was using games as a way to avoid the pressures of working life. “Honestly, I realized it was a bad thing when my mom would say things like, ‘When are you going to go apply for these jobs? When are you going to go back to school?’ And then in the back of my mind I kept hearing fun facts about these games.”
>Barry dropped out of college because he was not sure the high cost of tuition would pay off, but he now feels stuck in a minimum-wage food service job. He wishes he could find a career like his grandfather, who joined the phone company after high school and worked there for decades. “But there’s no option to do that,” he says.
>The researchers are not merely saying that young men, out of work, are turning to video games. They're saying that increasingly sophisticated video games are luring young men away from the workforce.
>The situation does not appear to be weighing on their happiness. Data shows that young non-college men actually report being happier than in the early 2000s, with the percentage of men saying they are very or pretty happy rising from 81 percent to 88 percent. In the same period, the reported happiness of other groups remained constant or fell.

I personally never had issues finding work because as opposed to most people I finished my education with trade and degree so it was easy for me to get a job in the industry as a low-tier peon and become something more but I can tell you how it all works here.
>15-16 years old kid, about to pick his next school >their previous education was just retarded learning to pass various tests/exams >have 3 picks, trade school, technical school and "proper" high school. >technical school allows you to go to universities but obviously a technician-mechanic will have harder time to get into law than a person after "proper" high school, while having it easier to get into mechanical engineering either way, it mostly depends on the exams >every logically thinking person would assume that the distribution would look like trade schools>tech schools>high schools >nope, good 60% go to high schools >half of those end up studying bullshit degree >they waste 8 years of their life learning something that is completely useless >wonder why a 20 years old welder with 2 years of experience out of school outcompetes their sorry 25-26 years old asses
And to blame just those people for falling for rat race is stupid. There's numerous things that make the workforce absolutely ill-fit for the economy, education system being only about academic/highschool stuff(almost no practical things), universities who push the "you don't know how partying feels like until you try college parties" mindset through friendly media channels, parents that want their kids to "have better life than them" unknowingly leading them into being NEETs, absolute lack of respect for the working man among the educated and rich, growing inequality and housing crisis, rampant materialism etc. all contribute to this.
If they think it's video games, think fucking twice because you're never going to solve the problems that cause it, otherwise.
Landon Harris
>but surveys suggest that young men are happier for it. Pursuit of happiness at work. This is a god given right, and in the Declaration of Independence for a reason.
The separatists realized they by the act of being birthed into this world, they didn't owe king and country any fucking favors - they didn't ask to be put here.
Look, I know people that fit into this category. I, myself, am a part of a group of guys (and a couple of gals) that are gamers. We're lifetime friends, and some of us moved on to families. Some of us didn't (or will not). I managed to pull a pretty successful life in the meantime (job, wife, kids, a couple of mortgages, manageable debts, etc.). That doesn't mean that life is for everyone.
In the end, application, aspirations, and time management is what it's all about; those and and sheer will. The people that obsess over what young men do with their time/lives are either failed parents, or women.

This article saw the problem but decided to interview a fringe player. This 21 yo kid has a better degree and a better job than 90% of his 30+ yo NEET counterparts who either never went to college, don't work, or both.
I admit I was similar to this kid in my 20s but video games weren't the CAUSE of it. They certainly were part of my life that I enjoyed but I can't say that if video games weren't as prevent that anything would've been different. It took me until my very late 20s to nut up, get to work, look for a soul mate and start a family. I'm not sure why so many of us have similar stories, but there is indeed a problem.

I don't play video games more than twice in a month, but I guess the reward is winning a fight or unlocking achivements. That's what man are made for. Men only put their want for instant gradivication down, if there is actualy a really great reward for it in the future, if they do so. Today society doesn't offer this to most Young man. The perspective is bad and it will likley get worse; if you do shitty job, it's paid bad and you can't raise to a higher position, because they only hire minorities or people with very specific college degrees, there are few reasons to work, if you can do something better like working for a honorable cause, like taking back our countrys and investing a great amount of your free time in video games why not?
Mason Gutierrez
Yes, the problem is video games and not the fact that for the past 30 years we've been systematically destroying low level jobs which had opportunities for advancement. Now if you want a full time job, the entry level positions require you to compete with people that have worked in that industry for years and as a 20-something year old, you will not be picked over someone older with more experience.
Companies have saved a lot of money by shipping off the shit jobs to other countries, but the results of it are clear with young people no longer able to work these jobs and move up the career ladder. Now they're stuck with shitty part time jobs or full time jobs which other people look down on.
The best bit is, jobs are still being moved to other countries today and we're starting to see a loss of middle level positions too. Eventually we'll see offices in other countries reporting to a single person in our own, instead of having a full office in ours of people working.
I wonder what the end result of this will be, are we ever going to stop fucking ourselves over by constantly bringing in more people while constantly removing jobs?

Huh, welfare, destruction of the family, feminism and communism doesn't work? WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT.
What's the reason for young men to get to work? To build a life, to start a family. That was taken away. Why do anything then? Self-satisfaction money. BAM, welfare takes care of that. And there you have it, unmotivated men and the resultant collapse of society as women find out, working is hard.

I can't even really fault you for that, as long as you vote for freedom and not welfare to actually create those opportunities. I'm struggling to get by with working, it's very stressful and not very rewarding but the welfare laws have already tightened. Ironically, I actually have a handicap which severely limits me but the government says "ain't so bad, just work boy, WORK *cracks whip*"

This is the core issue.
Society is presently built upon propaganda and guilt-compulsions.

I do not see a bright future for us, trump or otherwise.
$80k/yr now is like $50k/yr 6 years ago.
I will need to have saved a few million in order for the interest alone to support me when/if I retire.
Not going the 401k route again - after 3 years, it was worth only what I put in it. I might as well stuff money under my mattress.
Based on what I've seen in my family, there is no incentive for businesses to stand behind their pension plans, and they simply won't. My dad worked for IBM for nearly 30 years before they screwed him sideways.
Its just a carrot on a stick, IMO. Any employer that promises a retirement plan of any kind is just lying out the ass.
Aiden Parker
>He wishes he could find a career like his grandfather, who joined the phone company after high school and worked there for decades. “But there’s no option to do that,” he says.
Intense vidya gaming is a symptom but not the problem. Many NEETs are the result of public schools no longer teaching trade skills (shop class) and the leftist agenda to push everyone into college. Many people go into college because they are told that is what they are supposed to do. As a result these people who wash out end up directionless believing a trade skill is not an option for working. Once they realize this though it is too late as younger people who went straight into trades have taken the few jobs there are.
There are no more clear cut paths to careers shown to people today. Likewise, there aren't many places that will employ someone for until retirement like their used to be in the past. This is a result of the marxist-globalist agenda.
Tyler Davis
