Before 1917 they weren't even a thing, Austrians called them Low Russians (Ruthenians), Russians seen them as Russians.
But in 1917 Central Powers occupied Ukraine and established it as their puppet state.
But then Central Powers lost, and Bolsheviks were rushing to the east.
In meanwhile, Ukrs declared independence from Austria-Hungary, on a territory full of ethnic Poles, this triggered Polish-"West Ukrainian" war, which was won by Poland.
Then Ukraine allied of Poland because it was spooked by communists.
In the year 1920 Soviets went so far that they were under Warsaw, but were pushed back by Poles.
Poles in the end signed a peace treaty, because they didn't have enough men to liberate full territory of Ukraine.
Poland received Volhynia and remained East Galicia, Soviets took the rest of Ukraine.
Chochols went full butthurt and nationalistic, so Soviet solution to the problem was to starve milions of them to death, while Polish solution was limited to close the orthodox churches and schools.
In 1939 Bolsheviks backstabbed Poland while it was fighting with the Germans, and annected the remaining ethnic ukrainian lands. Chochols treated them as liberators, but after some time they noticed that they life became worse under Soviet rule.
In 1941 Germany invaded Soviet Union, and chochols were once again welcoming them as liberators, and even received their own government for several days. But then Germans noticed that they are shit and scrapped it. Chochols were sometimes sent to concentration camps, and thus the great """heroes""" of ukraine created a terrorist group which main goal was tho kill the remaining Polish civilians in Ukraine. They were fighting theoretically with Germans and Soviets, but actually they were always getting smashed by the both.

It depends on a situation. When they are allied with Russia, then they love them, and hate Poles, Hungarians instead. But while they try to be """western""", they hate """Muscovites""", and love the west instead.
Well, but Lvov is still an expression of the culture, the history of the Poles. They associate themselves with Lvov, as part of its culture and history part of their land. This is what we call ethnic territory.

Ruthenian prince of Halych-Volhynia.
The last prince of Galicia-Volhynia, Jerzy Boleslaw, was half Ruthenian and half Polish from the royal Piast line. He gave his lands of Galicia and Volhynia to his uncle, Karzimierz Wileki of Poland, in a downward agreement after his death. So these lands with Lwow passed down legally to Poland in 1340 after Boleslaw Jerzy's childless death. But the majority of his Ruthenian boyars didn't support it and Karzimierz wielki needed to wait 9 years before he got mad and forcefully took what was his in 1349 LEGALLY.
Besides, Lwow at that time was mostly built in wood, only one church and the castle on the mountain were built in brick and stone. When Karzimierz Wielki took it in 1349, he ordered to start building the new city. The old town of Lwow we see today was built during his rule and after it, even down to the street layout of the old town which was planned by his architects.
Ther was an already large Polish majority in Lwow in 1300, because there was an epidemic in Krakow so many moved to Lwow. The Polish majority quickly became the majority after Kazimierz Wielki, and Lwow had a Polish majority for around 600 years, while it's 750 years old in total. Lwow was in Poland longer than in Halycz/Galicia-Volhynia and Austria combined. LWOW IS POLISH TRHOUGH AND TRHOUGH, even thought it started out as a Ruthenian city.
Check, Tarnopol and Stanislawow (Ivano-Frankivsk) were founded and built by Polish noble hetmans (generals), and they are east of Lwow.
