USPS thread

Sup Forums, what is wrong with the USPS? Why can't it turn a profit?

Government has no profit motive. They can't adapt to new economic environments bc muhjobs.

usps lost a letter that i sent last week and lost a package i was supposed to receive this week. fuck them.

What ever happened to Eratas? It died pointing to the united states postal service

USPS has to run at a profit because it's not taxpayer funded. It gets a leg up over private companies by being exempt from most regulations and taxes

they don't charge junk mail advertisers enough for postage

They mail packages for around half their competition. They are slower, loose shit, and break shit.
Advantage, cheap
Disadvantage, poor quality.

Is the answer to abolish government-run services on principle, or simply force them to compete with private industries? The former leaves no guarantee that essential services would continue to exist without some nightmarish ancap scenario. The latter seems more attractive, but then begs the question of why the government service should even exist if it's continually outclassed by the DHLs and UPSs.

Well I guess the answer to that question would be that would have to be that the government service has to exist so that we will never have to worry about living in the first scenario.

But I heard that's how they make the majority of their money.

Mail man fag here.
I can try to give my perspective.

As usual it's the pensions.

There isn't an industry in the USA that couldn't be turning a profit if it wasn't for pensions.

I'm all ears.

It fucking sucks in every regard and instead of an incentive program for getting gud at the job they would rather slam you harder with extra work for being efficient.

It's more beneficial to be mediocre at best in regards to performance.

So fuck your letter. And that package you're waiting on? That's tomorrow.

Also label your God damn mail box clearly.

I can answer specific questions better.

I'd dick her if you know what i mean

Oh actually a fun tip
If you get mail that isn't yours

If on the corner where the stamp would go says standard, toss it right in the barrel.
Cuz we do if you give it back.

what did he mean by this?

Bullshit. Everything comes on time or early. Take your lies elsewhere

Uspa is a rare case of government working well

The USPS does turn a profit. Congress requires the USPS to fund pensions 75 years in advance, making it look like they're in the red. They're funding retirements for people who won't even be born for 20 years (55 is the USPS retirement age).
T. Postmaster on the East coast.

So a big part of the source of the bad service is that the workers aren't incentivized to be as efficient as possible? How can this be fixed? Also if you could elaborate on the mechanics of this system that would be nice too.

Also would charging more for junk mail be a good idea?

I work in the mailroom at a large state school and you wouldn't believe how much fucking pre-sorted standard shit comes in.

It does its job. Yes.

But internally it has the potential to be much better.
Also we keep pretending we are FedEx and is getting worse every year.
You guys just get to see the finished "product"

This, though they will have the 75 year reserve filled soon. Expect Congress to raid it and use the money for something else once the post office gets it fully funded and goes back to showing a profit.

I don't know how bad your office may be, but my office turns tremendous profit. Although I do know of a few offices in my area that are a mess. I guess a big part of that is (mis)management.

Something where if you finish under your scheduled time you get a monetary incentive maybe.
Or even a salary pay over hourly.
Something to regulate slog footing through your route.
Or even many routes I've worked through are imbalanced and it would be possible to lean them out and consolidate the excess into an entirely new route. Personnel won't want to kill themselves if they aren't constantly battling a clock and worried about going over.

It also wildly differs office to office.
And many problems happen before they even get to the local office.

Two words, government workers

Is working for the post office breddy comfy?

Are they always hiring?

I want a Union job again.

Many of them are actually very good at it. But others not.
This isn't no DMV

Butterface

Because they're a quasi-private entity our government won't fucking leave alone but at the same time mandates all of its policies and provides no funding. The government wouldn't even know how to balance a fulcrum with equal weights on either end -- they just talk big and run everything at a deficit. With or without funding USPS.

If they'd let the USPS throw out their deprecated pension system that almost no other private entity uses anymore that would be a big weight lifted. There are other avenues such as raising the price of postage and increasing the rate for bulk mail delivery that nobody fucking wants anyway.

Depends on where and what job. From what I've seen working inside is comfier

Congress won't let it. They wanted to close thousands of small rural post offices and every Republican rep lost his shit. So they kept them open.

They could start by stop giving subsidies to Chinese imports.

Let me ask you, has the military ever turned a profit?
>inb4 70 years ago

Whose worse, the lifers in the BMV or the contractors hired to supplant the lifer postal, . . erm . . *cough* "workers"?

These.

Less offices are a bigger nightmare performance wise.

Although maybe not. You'd still require the same amount of personnel to deliver. Office or not. But then you have to figure out where to put the surge of people coming into already busy offices.

Wait the military can turn a profit? It's something that could in theory happen?

I work with both. So no. The military issue is that you don't need to. You can run red as hard as you want and money will still come.
>That's why Afghanistan cash have 10 million missing and unaccounted for
The only contractors I've seen personally are truck drivers to distribute among offices

its not supposed to turn a profit.
its a service provided by the government, if they turn a profit youre government is fucking you.

and how come when looking at the side of her ass you can see almost the whole thong?
something wrong with that.

Yes despite tossing all unused military vehicles at the end of WW2 it spurred the US as a whole to dominate the global economy just through pure production. Then globalists, liberals/hippies, and kikes seeped their fingers further and further into the by product of WW2 causing the US to be dependent on banks and the silver standard. Billions of gold disappearing.
>because it went unaccounted for and unrecognized it's okay

dude. seriously. is this bitch a now bitch or some bitch from the 70s?
she even got camels on her bikini look like the cigarettes. dont nobody smoke nomore except old people.

>I can answer specific questions better.

What is the length and girth of your cock fully erect?

I can't remember the regulation, but it is illegal for the military to turn a profit. The reason being is because then it wouldn't need Congress, as it could self fund itself. This is why it is so dangerous if the CIA is turning a profit by infiltrating the drugs and arms black market, since it could self fund black ops projects with zero Congressional (or Presidential) oversight.

~Ex-military, Finance

This causes further government dependency and major oversight resulting in overspending in extreme excess further indenturing the American people as a result. Boy do I love mega loans from the FED reserve, backed by silver now(killing JFK), that just prints money and continues to fund standard Bilderburg regulars.

This.

Didn't congress also start bleeding something like a billion per year out of the USPS?

We also spent over a trillion dollars on the F-35 program alone.

Yes.

I heard that supposedly the Pentagon Comptroller lost trillions of dollars, which he/she can't account for the missing monies. I can say 100% without a doubt, that is impossible which there are a bunch of people lying. The simple fact that Congress didn't punish anyone and isn't attempting to identify where the funds went suggests there are Congressmen that would paid off (probably with the same stolen federal funds).

It was like 5 billion a year for a decade.

I don't follow.

Thanks, Republicans.

>Package marked as delivered
>Never delivered
>This has happened to me three times in the past year

That's why

up until the mid 90's the USPS had a monopoly on delivery with the daily mail services. They were completely inept, and going to the post office was probably one of the worst experiences the average citizen could have. The post offices were filled with individuals that just didn't give a fuck because they had MUH CONTRACTED GOBMENT JOB. That attitude left them almost broke in the early part of this decade, and they've been unable to adapt to the internet delivery world where they need to be competitive to survive. UPS going to take their spot as they have taken on more work than they can handle and the services are suffering while USPS has improved exponentially.

I have had really good luck with USPS i only had one problem over the many years that i have used them and that was outright theft from an employee and USPS made it right. UPS is the shittiest package delivery i have ever used and they break my shit constantly.

Never had a problem with FEDEX but i dont use them very often.

DHL is the redpilled parcel service

All government postal services are shit since why would these guys work harder but at the end of the day they still get paid a fixed amount regardless of work done?

It sucks that the delivery or transit times are shit but here in my country, there are no taxes or duties to be paid if we import via regular post services of countries.

The shitty thing is that if we use faster services not only do we have to pay a ludicrous amount but we also pay a shit ton more for taxes and duties that would equate to 100% of the package's estimated worth and then some.

But I guess that's the customs department and I would love to just nuke that shit because they steal shit from ordinary people and impose high taxes and duties.

>be military
>need to kill 7,000,000 hadjis to meet quota
>only kill 6,000,000
>budget gets upped 50%
>kill 8,000,000 following quarter
>budget gets slashed 50%
>start leasing soldiers to cuck nations
>canada biggest customer
>triples our budget
>we just run around in french garb
>wave white flags
>apoligise profusely
got new tanks thou.

I'm a programmer for them. Great benefits and, thanks to the union, all you have to do is show up. You could literally dick around on your phone all fucking day and they probably still couldn't find a way to fire you unless you sexually harass someone or try to browse porn.

First reason is declining mail volume and fierce competition in package delivery.

Second reason is that they're required by law to serve everyone equally. Which is why there's a post office in Lebanon, KS. So no optimization is possible.

Third is that their prices are also regulated by law I think. I'm not very sure about this though.

The reason is not that it's a government operation. You can pay 2 dudes with grad degrees in business 200k and they'd implement a better system than FedEx has, and unlike what everyone seems to believe it's not as easy to be corrupt enough to cause 5 billion loss. So there's something more fundamental.

Ever been to a post office

One word

Niggers

I feel like this is one of those problems that just keeps coming up, but is a serious issue. Are unions really so impossible to deal with that you can't even show them an obviously shitty employee and agree to fire them?

no way fag

what does this mean? junk mailers must pay more.

I'm a Fedex Express courier and in my totally unbiased anecdotal experience USPS employees are complete assholes who always give me dirty looks.

UPS and DHL couriers are total bros in comparison.

Nah. We have loads of black people who work at Fedex and they're some of the hardest working people I know.

The difference is low class niggers versus middle class black folk.

worked at ups as a seasonal loader one autumn. if you aren't a hard worker you won't last. worked with browns, blacks, whites... all pretty great but the pay was shite.

Same. The only problem I ever have with USPS is that they actually deliver a day earlier than expected on a package that requires signature confirmation. Since I wasn't expecting them to arrive a day early, I have to drive my ass to the post office to pick up my shit, usually on the next day which is the day my package was supposed to arrive anyway.

Pay's shit because you were just a seasonal loader. Management only hires seasons because it's cheaper than paying employees overtime.

>The former leaves no guarantee that essential services would continue to exist without some nightmarish ancap scenario.

why the fuck do you think this?

if there is an ESSENTIAL service that people want, there will be a huge market for it, and someone would fill that void. even with the USPS you still have companies popping up because the desire for better service is there.

youre the guy who thinks we need governments to build our roads.

FedEx office employee here.
UPS delivers us uline supplies which is funny when they come inside the store and give us our supplies. Friendly banter but they are bros.

I'm getting real sick of people trying to do regular mail here as well as couriers picking up from the drop box and see a bundle of envelopes in there with no fxo labels on them.

You couriers are all right. We hate y'all though if you can't even stat 13 when picking up because it totally fucks over the stores and districts with the metrics.

USPS funds it's self
get the fuck out privatization shilll
usps makes a profit
usps makes a profit
usps makes a profit and competes in a open market with fedex and UPS
USPS has better services then UPS or fedex, that is why they got the amazon contract.

get fucking real neoliberal cucks, god I hate you so fucking much
>hurrduurr the government can't do anything right
maybe next time pick a example that fits your retarded narrative, because everything else you privited worked out so well, or wait it didn't

Price fixing by the legislature. No chance to adapt even though it's part of what makes America.

Leaf here. Whenever I buy anything online and its getting shipped from the US, I always try to get it shipped by USPS. All the other carriers charge an outrageous fee to bring stuff over the border. For example, UPS charges a customs processing fee, EVEN WHEN THE PRODUCT IN MADE IN THE USA (no duties nothing). USPS just hands it over to Canada Post, 99% of the time I don't pay customs, shit arrives on time.

I'd say its a good service. Not sure how they can become profitable though.

Apparently there's a guy on the other side of the building that just plays hearthstone all day. I haven't heard of anyone ever being fired outside of their probationary period unless they cause a major shitstorm.

Agree. Privatisation of essential services trashes them. It's what happened to Telstra in Australia. These neoliberal right wing faggots can fuck off with their corporate cocksucking.
