This is a potentially big problem as you pointed out. We have seen this time and time again in the US where the more government gets involved in something, the more expensive it becomes such as education, medicine, energy, finance, housing, etc. As pointed out, drugs are cheaper in Canada, but that is mostly due to price controls which is a form of socialism that only serves to create shortages and forces the cost to be borne in other ways. The monopoly route is bad as well, but allowing competition from abroad will do a lot to control the price on it's own.
Same with health coverage by the way. For decades, it has been illegal for an insurance company in one state to sell health coverage to a person in another state.

This "form of socialism" is called a purchasing cooperative. Something corporations have been using for a long time. Taking of advantage of the increased leverage you receive when you pool purchasing power is like taking advantage of supply and demand. They are both natural forces.
Your system does not allow pooling of purchasing power currently. Ours does. It is a big reason why drugs are more expensive. You should be able to do that too, Bernie "no refunds" Sanders is right on this one and Trump has said as much himself.
