Their argument is painfully hollow. It can be defeated simply by looking at what it would do to logistics to begin with. If everyone could live far away from centralized hubs of production that are possible via population density directly it would scale the cost of rendering those goods and services. It would cost more energy and waste to supply similar populations.

I would argue that the population densities would still not be great enough in their scenario.
I will go on further though and point out the most serious flaw and why I say humanity will not scale.
If you give everyone access to an infinite supply of money that allows them to meet out all the basic necessities of life you just doomed the planet at 8 billion people.
Everyone will want to live like a westerner and will expect electricity, meat, entertainment, infrastructure.
Let's pretend that in some magical bizzaro universe that at the same exact time somehow humanity could meet all of those energy requirements with green energy. Even in that scenario it fails, and it fails horribly.
Be it fossil or green energy the planet is going to experience industrial exploitation on a scale that makes our efforts look minuscule. Even if you had green energy you have to exploit rare earths and that cannot be done with battery powered vehicles. As you try to flip over industry to these green solutions you hit a brick wall.
Rare earths run out, easily exploitable rare elements run out. Mass pollution from earth wife exploitation continues the collapse of the oceans that's already occurring.
The biggest killer is meat production, it will not scale to meet global demand as it's so wasteful. Even if you force humanity at gunpoint to a vegan/vegetarian diet the increase in standard of living will cause humanity to exhaust it's Phosphorus supplies that are already critically low.
That is the final nail in the coffin. Exploitable Phosphorus, the life blood of fertilizer is nearly entirely exploited. The only way to recover it is through intensive agriculture. You cannot force the world to adopt that type of practice along with veganism/vegetarianism.
Scarcity will cause inevitable conflict. The only way humanity will ever move forward is if it learns to prune itself of it's diseased branches.

All major industry in the United States grew as a result of proximity and access to natural resources. Detroit depended on Pennsylvania steel, and Pennsylvania steel depended on Pennsylvania coal. Pennsylvania oil and gasoline were still a thing then too.
