The goal of the war was to stop the spread of communism, which we ultimately succeeded in doing. There is not a single country in the world today that practices communism.

North Vietnam won. The US won militarily, but that's not what counts. Back home everyone was complaining about muh poor innocent farmers and baby killing Marines, so the war was very unpopular. The US had to withdraw, and first we had North Vietnam sign a treaty that said they would leave South Vietnam alone. They signed, we skedaddle, and not long after, North Vietnam breaks the treaty and takes South Vietnam. We couldn't go back, because the war was so unpopular.
