Hitler is commonly referred to as one of the worst dictators ever. I do not disagree. However, mostly I read this in context to his Holocaust and World War II actions toward other nations. I'm curious about how he was to a German.
For this exercise, let's leave out the Jews, Gypsies, gays and external enemies like the USSR and Poland. How bad was he to everyday non-Untermensch German citizens? Besides sending his citizens into a disastrous war, how was living under Nazism?
Was the Gestapo ruthless to Germans, like the NKVD or Kempetai to its own citizens? Did the Nazis suppress free speech and assembly (etc)? Did he do purges and gulags for speaking against him? For the average everyday German (family man, works 9-5, doesn't plan coups, etc), how would Hitler's dictatorship rate with Mao, Stalin, Saddam, etc?
My parents told me some of that my great-grandparents disliked Hitler and that they were communists. They made it through the war and Nazi Germany though.

If a German soldier were to run or defect, their families back home would be imprisoned or outcasted from the community. If they're willing to do that to their own soldiers, I can't imagine they arent afraid of abusing their own people.

German citizens loved the Nazi party during its reign user. Hitler turned their degenerate country around completely and helped make it a superpower. Once he achieved that, he decided to start taking back portions of their country that were taken from them during the first world war.
The Jews hated him because of this and because he had the balls to say what was really going on within their country (that Jews were swindling them and enslaving their people through debt, poverty, and degeneracy. Much like what is happening within westernized civilization now).

Don't believe the fluff, my grandpa was in Germany during Hitler years. It is inarguable they turned the country around and became prosperous, especially compared to before.
But The party was in Power Totally and therefore paranoid of losing it. If you complained or resisted in any way shape or form you -would- go in and dissapear. Then again - since there was such a noticable improvement - why WOULD you complain or resist? Apparently you had to prove racial purity when trying to marry, that you have German ancestry if you wanted to own land and it could prove difficult importing anything Germany itself was producing (hence my grandads experience)

I have formulated my own opinion from an immense time investment and interest in WW2. I have seen both sides, I have put myself in there shoes and I believe that logically one side was right.
Just like I know U.S.A was subverted and indoctrinated into believing we were the bastion for all nations, a melting pot for all. There only argument that it was is a literal translation of a world 250 years ago when Europeans were the only relevant race.
I also believe that logically, the only way to not become a communist authoritarian government shithole is to get rid of ALL non white inhabitants (Aside from Natives) and the only way to achieve this is at this point is a European Socialist civil war.
