But imagine if since the 50s or so, you were just given things and not asked to do anything for it. Now imagine if at any point of time someone came along and told you they were going to change that. I'd agree with leaving it at the State level instead of the federal, since I think states should be allowed to do what they want, but removing the governments hand out of the entire equation means people are less resentful about having their money taken away, and given the choice, I'd think the people who could afford it would donate to those private organizations that support the poor. But I guess that's more it looks better on paper than practice.
