What was the internet like from 2000-2007?

What was the internet like from 2000-2007?

I've only just turned 18 (born 1999) so I'm really curious.

I think it's pretty cool that there seems to have been memes even back then such as pic related, that star wars kid guy and also that Orly owl.

smaller and slower mainly

youtu.be/ayWQGYHG2GQ

you are welcome

it was more 'shallow' in the sense that you would spend time on like 100 different websites instead of just a handful like facebook/twitter/youtube/etc. which now take up like 90% of all web traffic

there were also WAY less normies which made it great

Was that a ytmnd or video?

I still don't really get what a ytmnd is/was.

screech screech screech brrrrrr

Holy fuck I'm old. Feels bad man

Fucking hell
Just nuke Sup Forums and start over somewhere else please

comfy af desu

I still have fond memories of watch the Angry video game nerd as he was just starting out.

It was vastly superior, because only leftist sites had leftist mods.

You need to get your non-political post off my fucking board.

Those were horrible times

'membah this?

The constant hardcore porn popups were nice though. Saw my first pussy aged 9 or so

Here's a story of my life on the Internet someone else graciously made.

I am barely old enough to remember how things used to be, I got a couple of years experiencing the internet until Facebook ruined literally everything and online anonymity is mostly dead.

I remember when it used to be a big deal not to share your real name on the internet, and now people share literally every moment of their life.

You make me feel old, and yes years before and after internet are like day and night, everything was more local.etc, fuck off now kid

memes were 15yo ADHD type humor, think tacgnol, mudkips, itty bitty baby, epic fail guy, THAT FUCKING CAT, gaijin4koma, WRYYYYYYYYY etc

i think the main difference was that memes had no subject matter but themselves or each other whereas nowadays it's all referring to real life somehow

Who cares.

The year you were born and below were better years, with better games.

gifs with sound
lower quality webms that looked like myspace banners

Hahahhahahahabab Jesus man I actually forgot that if someone got on the phone it would kick you off the Internet.

I miss the surrealist days of memes.

>limewire
Newfag.

eDonkey is where it's at. eMule is OK

There was not as much porn which was bad but you could also do whatever you wanted because nobody knew what the internet was or what to do about it. That part was cool.

they were not forced

fuck you guys I am getting so old
who else here remembers tabby from Sup Forums

What was the point of them though?

edonkey was shit

limewire was great because you could download an illegal copy of limewire pro on limewire free

Can confirm

Also YouTube buffer

a lot of celebrity stuff tho

Nigga plz. It was all about Bearshare or limewire, not your pathetic donkey client

Fuck off what about that fat cunt boxxy.

I remember when her tits suddenly became juicy

fucking hell. where is she now?

I wish I could go back. The whole internet was full of tight knit groups with things akin to board culture. The average person didn't use the internet extensively like they do now, so the internet was full of social rejects. Social media was a lot different too, it wasn't about looking the best or showing off how good your life was. There wasn't a big consumer culture presence on the internet.
It was comfy.

Look, we're going to have to deal with the next generation eventually. Think of it as an opportunity to beat the stupid out of them.

entertaining timesinks

it's hard to describe. It felt a lot smaller then it does today, but at the time it felt very far-reaching. The memes, slang, and culture of the internet was very...well, primitive. Much simpler, less meta. no one really knew how the fuck this whole internet business worked,so it was kinda like a white cake. Simple, a little bland, but ripe with potential.

I just realized I'm describing 95-05's. Around 05ish we started to see the rise of social media. it was awesome to most of the "internet savy" folks, but it got massive, and then suddenly the news was talking about it. It hit true mainstream around that time. before then, it felt like a big "secret" because of how narrow our modes of connection were.

post 05 was also the rise of reddit. if I remember right, it didn't get big until ~08-10. it was a really weird combination of the "secret internet underbelly" and the wide-reaching social-media-style stuff that was starting to grow.

It was a naive place, in a lot of ways. But it didn't feel like it at the time. I've noticed the internet has a wonderful way of reflecting us back to ourselves. It makes it incredibly enjoyable to watch as "the internet" grows and evolves over time. And Sup Forums is quite honestly one of the most important hubs, and has been since early 00s.

They mostly were focused on Chris W Chan

makes shitty youtube videos, sometimes "underwear haul" video to keep the views coming in

>newfag
newfag

>Look, we're going to have to deal with the next generation eventually

We already are, they're the majority here now

It was more... mysterious and interesting than today. You had to actually do an effort on yourself to efficiently plan your researches, thus you use to discover plenty of unexpected stuff during your quests.

Nowadays, most people seem to be stuck on social medias and a couple of websites. They're like zombies roaming in a deserted Kmart. Internet slowly became the future of television.

That's one thing I've heard.

Interacting on forums and online communities back then was something people didn't talk about because it was seen as sad. Communities were full of introverts who enjoyed each others company and posted in 1337 speak ironically.

Now everyone from 30 year old professionals to 70 year od grandmothers is on a forum or on facebook debating and interacting with others with no shame. Lots of even using their real names.

>Netspace
netscape*

also gaming was much more fun, i still remember all the clans i played in in starcraft and warcraft 3

Communities were much stronger back then and DRM didn't exist. Pirating was just registering on a forum and right-click download whatever you wanted. Downside: humor was much cringier back then.

Fuck facebook and smartphones, it made normies flock to the internet in droves

I checked, this is how she looks now, kek
youtube.com/watch?v=UNUL51Qnjhs&t=1s

her tits were such a good fapping material when I was back in high school, Sup Forums even found some nudes of her I remember, then she started doing vids with her bf and suddenly, she ceased to be interesting on Sup Forums

I remember the time before youtube. Youtube blowing up was really the biggest tipping point in the history of internet. Then came facebook etc. But back then everything was much more spread out. I remember websites like habbo, stupid videos, old school runescape, albinoblacksheep. Now most things are owned by (((google))).

youtube.com/watch?v=gsNaR6FRuO0

Turn speakers all the way up for maximum nostalgia

The internet was a fun distraction until social media and phones came along and the real world co-opted every facet of it. Now it's just one long inescapable nightmare.

Runescape, mostly

I wouldn't say it was seen as sad, because if you tried to explain it to people they wouldn't have any idea about what you were talking about.
Some older people back then didn't even know how to send an email or close a browser window.

First thing i knew to be a meme i still called them me me

>Also YouTube buffer
used to be so annoying, but internet has become a lot better since 00's, haven't had a youtube video buffering itself for ages now, unless I am using some shitty public wifi

You forgot ebaumsworld and cokemusic

>so you guys. I got a ferret!
My heart melted just thinking about this vid. Other queens ain't got shit on Tabby.

youtube.com/watch?v=PQHPYelqr0E

It was fun. The last time I had real fun on the internet was ... last decade, now that I think about it. Nobody that didn't experience it can ever hope to really understand how great it was. I'm sorry, OP. You were born too late.

I remember ytmnd being my first real introduction to "memes" and bash.org being my gateway to sort of crude internet humor. Newgrounds was also sort of formative but flash humor was such a flash in the pan that it didn't really influence anything afterwards. I do remember the days when Ultimate Showdown and Metal Gear Awesome came out. The internet was a lot more fun when accessibility was limited and nobody knew what they were doing. Massive potential was there but I don't think anyone outside of a few loons, the government and David Bowie realized what you could do with instantaneous communication.

I think the turning point was YouTube and Facebook becoming big. I remember my younger self hearing about YouTube and wondering why anyone would wanna watch videos of themselves. Boy was I wrong.

my first gif no tits or GTFO

It was more wild west, more illegal stuff while getting caught was almost impossible

Miniclip and Shockwave were the best

I can sum this up another way.

Back then, you could make a shitty little flash game about punching some famous faggots face in and nobody cared.

Do that today, and that faggot cries to the media and gets 200,000 pity dollars for being brave.

It was more raw and in a way the people who didn't know each other irl were more connected.
So like on Facebook you only talk with people you know in real life mostly, and you don't form bonds with people on there with people you don't know irl.
Back in the dialup (and early "high speed" which was really just slightly faster than dialup) days and such though you would go on these niche chat rooms (irc etc) and you would have a shared interest and connect with people and get to talking with them personally and forming these amazing bonds with people you will never meet.
Also there were niche forums that would have like ~100 or less people who consitently posted on it, but the community would Be really strong because they all knew each other and all posted literally every day. (Blizzhackers.com was where I lived basically in those days)

Oh yeah, and porn sites actually gave viruses. I remember myself being about 7 in the early 2000s and actively browsing porn because it was mystically exciting and shocking at the same time. Don't know if that fucked me up somehow.

>SCWOOOOOOOORE!
she will always be our first love

Dude....it...was....AWESOME

Same, I found Sup Forums through conjoined YTMND-Sup Forums Habbo Hotel 9/11 raids.

I know that feel m8

women are funny, DEAL WITH IT

...

To add to this, I've more or less come to terms with the fact that the rest of my life will basically be spent trying to relive the high of the early 00's internet and being doomed to fail at doing so. So perhaps in a way it's good that you'll never know how great it was.

This stuff is all archived you don't need a bunch of old men to describe it to you through rose tint.

She looks weird now.....nice body with an aged face

I fucking hated the Ultimate Showdown why would you remind me aaaaaaaaa

This. Young minds are easily influenced.

Archives don't do shit, you needed to actually experience it!

>Image galleries for porn
>Video games were good af
>Competitive games like quake are a lot better than what we have now
>Shitty geocities websites with shitty songs playing in the background
>I'm pretty sure bonzai buddy gave you computer aids
>less memes but still a lot of shit talking

>bonzai buddy
oh fuck i forgot about this nigger

YTMND Newgrounds Myspace (from like 04-06)

Memes were forced and you ended up with stuff like youtu.be/t54QQ3enkes, Ebaumsworld was pure evil to the internet and were the proto-normies, Newgrounds videos like this were entertainment youtu.be/hd9ySXONbuo

Socom on the ps2 was fucking Amazing

You listened to this youtu.be/m4dJN6MX-6I this youtu.be/GHyV9V-37zc or this youtu.be/8mGBaXPlri8 until this came out and infected the youth youtu.be/WcwweoJDkV0

And most of all, we felt safe from terrorists

youtube.com/watch?v=KbDV1afDSn0

...

There were some savage memes coming out of the old everquest guild Fires of Heaven forum.

I wouldn't call it funny, it's just cute to watch

yeah, all girls who mature fast start to look so old when they hit mid-20's

It's cringey now but it was cool back then.

I knew about Sup Forums for years and had the potential to be an oldfag but never really visited due to being scared of the website.

Then in 2009/2010 I finally ran into some people in my high school who regularly visited the website and I got hooked. I guess 7, almost 8 years on this website still makes me "old" but really I'm just a newfag with experience.

Way less clickbait shit and corporate shilling

steakandcheese

Socom was amazing is true
