The AK has more in common with the M1 garand in operation than the STG44, right down to the two lug bolt and long stroke piston.

They're functionally different. At most they are both gas operated and look the same.

How do the internals compare to each other?

What was the equivalent of the AK, before it spread everywhere? A gun that could be found in any 3rd world shithole, arming militias, gangsters, warlords, etc. Did any gun achieve similar popularity?

It's essentially an enclosed M1 Garand with the op rod moved above the bore like the STG44. the controls are straight up Remington model 8 while the mag and stamped construction are STG44 copies that they literally failed at, went milled (actual AK47), before the captured Germans unfucked their stampings and making the AKM that's so common.

There's all kinds of issues with the AK notably aiming, it's hard as fuck to hit anything.

You can hold an AR-15 like a pistol and hit almost dead on target everytime with little recoil it's that easy to use.

When you throw enough shit at the wall, some of it will stick.

The idea of an automatic self-loading rifle had been around for many years. The Russians were the first to actually field one with the Federov, I believe. The Germans were just the first to really put it all together in the form factor [intermediate cartridge, pistol grip, moderate barrel length] that we consider an assault rifle.

STG44 was a stamped receiver gun, very impressive at the time, AK was initially stamped (badly), then milled receivers, then stamped again.

They both have similar gas systems, but the stg44 uses a tilting bolt lock up, which is less suited to mass production, whilst the AK uses a rotating bolt lock up, which is probably the better design.

Both use a smaller intermediate cartridge as a opposed to a big rifle round, which gives both weapons a great deal more flexibility.

Overall the AK is clearly the better weapon due to its success, but the stg44 is the more innovative design that the AK is definitely at least "inspired" by.

The AK was inspired by the role the 44 played on the battle field. The guts of the two are different. It's only the grip and the shape of the magazines that make people think they are mechanically similar.

He got so good at shooting it he was able to sniper timmy with it with 100% accuracy and made his own custom magazine to hold more rounds. He also used the bayonet to clear a house once when Timmy came out to surprise them. SKS truly is the best gun Russia ever produced

Russia seems to have a serious problem with modernizing their small arms. It seems like every two years or so they start a new project to replace the AK-74 and they axe the last one. The AN-94, the AEK, the AK-107, the AK-12, that one weird newish one with the PDW style stock. Every few years they release the next "replacement" rifle, and it inevitability only gets issued to a few units before production is halted because it's too expensive and doesn't do anything the old AK-74Ms don't do.

I guess I can't say its a real problem, because the AK-74M is a fine rifle even if it is old, but it seems to be a distinctly Russian issue.

Well that makes sense. A gun just needs to shoot and be reasonably good at doing that. Even if you can get something to be more accurate there's still the question of if it's worth it depending on how much money it costs and other trade offs. The guy above talking about the AR-15 being modular also has a point. I don't know how modular the AK-74 is compared to the AR-15 but I'm sure it could be improved considering how old the AK-74 is. I think the US' standard assault rifle is fairly old too, but just being modified over time, though not as old as the AK-74.
