This is correct. Greek was even the lingua franca in the levant and the Philistines in the bible were Greeks. Greece had a huge population boom and colonized most of the East med, and even parts of the west med, before the rise of Rome.
Western and central anatolia was Greek for 2,000 years before the invasion at Manzikert at the end of the 11th century. It still pretty much is today as well. 100,000 Turks do not put a very large dent into 20 million Greeks. The swarthier ones are more Armenian or Kurd, in the east.
