yeah, i always wanted to visit syria (and jordania and iran) but never managed to get off my ass to do so. It wouldn't even have been expensive. The norias of hama, the old town of aleppo, the citadel, palmyra, countless sites of important and impressive cultural heritage of long gone civilizations, all gone. I really hope it's not all fucked and they manage to keep what they have intact in the troubles of the coming post war period.

I visited Jordan a few years before the war and it was great. From the stone cut city of Petra of the south to the salty Dead Sea to the west, it was really great. The people were extremely friendly, the atmosphere was great. I would visit again once the dust settles, not sure how they're dealing with refugees and the war to the north though.
Iran must be great too, but I don't dare to go there until I go to the US next year. I hear you have a good chance of being denied at the border once they find out you've been Iran.

I have a friend that's been to iran and later to the US without problems. He's as german as you can get though, that probably helped with the US visa. Also probably that he's been to countless countries.

Yeah, take the time to visit. I was only a kid back then so I don't remember much but it is definitely worth it. As for speaking arabic, I wish that I did. They spoke decent english, so that wasn't a problem. That coupled with their overall openness and friendliness, you can get by mostly anywhere in the country.
As for Iran, a friend of mine is getting married in the US next year. I'm sure I'd only get a background check and a long interview as to why and where, but can't afford that small risk of being turned away lol.
