The fantasy is that things will play out to your benefit, but probably people will just care less and less about race as more and more of their social circles and families are mixed. Most Americans aren't what they think they are and this is done entirely through last names and where you "think" they're from (which a lot are shared by multiple countries). This means you could indeed have a German last name which was from the Netherlands and only have 12.5% German blood or less yet are still a "German American".
