IIRC you get 200km from your coast to international waters as sovereign waters.

Creating a island and claiming it as your own gives you fishing rights and other resource explotation rights.

Because economic lifeline, fishing, ressources and similar strategic reasons why America cares about Guam some trillion miles away from its coast.

Exclusive Economic Zones.

12 miles around the islands is considered territorial waters
200 miles is exclusive economic activity for owners of the islands
>China would have exclusive mineral and fishing rights there

Thats why it is important

Strategic points for naval invasion for strategic resources

Their farmland is fucked and is going to be more fucked with them polluting themselves for quick bucks.

They need the eat the fishies to extinction to live now. Any civilized country have legal limits on how big and how much you can catch. The Chinese don't fucking care about that.

It basically allows you to take a chunk of international waters to youself.

Why isn't countries doing this more often? because of the impracticality of land-filling seabed outside the continental shelf.

Panama has the largest merchant vessel fleet in the world, this sort of stuff is high school shit for us.

Because they're trying to distract their own people from the shitty situation of their own country.

It's where the legendary birds are.

The south China Sea is so shallow following Chinese subs is easy for us military, if they get these islands or Taiwan they can get their subs off the continental shelf to deep water and possibly get Thierry boomers off the west coast unnoticed,, it would increase their strategic detergent value by orders of magnitude

Because they never won a war and this lets them feel like they're conquering something other than villagers and Buddhist monks.

one of the most triggering things about china and chinese people in general desu
every coastal country basically comes into conflict with chinese fish bandits sneaking into their territorial waters and stealing their fish being complete cunts about it

No it doesn't. China tried that and the world rejected that claim.

If China tries to enforce their 'right' to the waters around their fake islands they will in time end up facing the US Navy.

>Panama has the largest merchant vessel fleet in the world, this sort of stuff is high school shit for us.
It doesn't belong to Panama it's just registered in Panama. A flag of convenience.

>they will in time end up facing the US Navy.
im sure they'll be fine

all it takes is one "natural" Tsunami to wreck all of their shit.

You think that if China tried to use military force against the US Navy China will be fine because a Cruiser hit something?

Theyve already started building on these meme islands and using land reclamation and shit to make them bigger

basically if they leave the chinks alone to do this shit theyre gonna be military bases in 2-3 years

>don't worry I bet these people who lived with Tsunamis and considered Tsunamis in their constructions for millenia have not considered it this time.

Good goy. Thats the right attitude.

Who should we support anons? It seems Vietnam has the strongest claims to these islands is the one most likely to oppose China in this area.
