STEM is more conservative, primarily because it's more tilted toward men. Look at the left/right distribution of any field of study, and then compare the male/female distribution.
The humanities started to fail when it was evident that tech was the new hotness, the humanities had to do something to drum up enrollment and get people to actually consider them. What did they do? Pandered. They started pushing for minorities to get into humanities by playing on they base hatred for the "System" and painting white people as the problem. Make no mistake, everyone regardless of skin color is racist. After that they started doing intersectional things, and kept with the same idea of getting the "oppressed" into humanities for worthless degrees. People got those shit degrees, went out into the real world where they had no application, and fell back on the victimization training they had gotten in college.

i study law at Cambridge and its not particularly liberal. STEM students are really autistic though, my best friend does mech eng and is aspie af but still much less than most of his peers.
In stem fields you analize facts and obtain predictive results. If something doesn't add up, you can see it. If you are not sure about turth, you can test it.
In social science you read some made up bullshit that is untestable and pretend you learned something that is actually useful. You are unable to actually find truth.

STEM will probably get better jobs with good benefits. They dont want to pay for peoples shitty decisions through taxes. Most people I encounter in Mechanical Engineering arent extremely passionate about it, they just like the job security and the high prospects of advancement in the field. They have to bust their balls to get to where they are and generally look down on some of the easier and less practical college majors. I guess its that they are sacrificing the possibility of going into a field they would truly enjoy to give themselves a better life. If people want to choose low pay/low advancement majors why should those who dont have to pay for it?
Colleges are simply buisinesses looking to make money. The easier degrees are the more money they make. If they tell a bunch of liberals what they want to hear, they get even more attendance, and more money.
They are liberal for the same reason most media is. Its telling people what they want to hear.

I'm currently studying electrical engineering and here's what I observed
Law studies : mixed, but no far right
Engineering, maths, sciences : usually far left
The only places where I saw the majority of right wing was groups of people in high school who didn't even go to collage.
I used to be an amateur astronomer and a lot of my friends who I met while being one are now studyng Astrophysics, so I met alsomst all astrophysics students, and Ph.D in my country (there aren't many really, around 50 stundents combined and maybe 20-30 Ph.D) - 90% were far left communist
