Unfortunately, the internet has created a platform where it's extremely easy for people to only consume media that validates their pre-conceived beliefs which (usually) are not true or half true.
It's a mix of growing social inequality (driven by income and wealth inequality, genuine racism is so rare now discussing race has become a weird proxy for actually talking about class issues) and that people can easily construct an echo chamber where their beliefs are never challenged. Objectively, quality of life and safety have never been better for any society at any point in time, but it's easy to make it appear that things aren't that way.
It was mostly "Lol Bush, what an idiot!", that was in a time where SJW's weren't really a thing and neither was social media.

Also remember, only 25% of the population voted for him and he lost the popular vote by 3 million. So he's starting off way worse than Bush, but he does have Republican support generally, but his approval rating sinks everyday.
Something to keep in mind with that is only about 25% of the population considers themselves Republicans, and about 29% are Democrats. Republicans are often more likely to vote and get active in politics, so while it seems like he has support of half the country, it's more that he has support of a very outspoken and well represented fourth.

A lot of statistics traditionally described in terms of race (crime, college graduation rate, etc) also work for economic status. Minority groups historically have less means to begin with, so the left focuses on bringing them up by increasing access to things like education for those groups.
Unfortunately, this leaves out poor whites who are in just as bad a situation as poor blacks, native americans, etc. While the left has good intentions in supporting programs that increase access to education for people of color and women, they leave out a huge demographic of people who also need that help, but are ignored because of the color of their skin.
It's a weird choice, but makes sense if you consider the history of the US. Here, being poor is an individuals fault (when really the likelihood of wealth has more to do with family history than anything). The left substituted race and gender, things that nobody can say are the fault of anything but genetics, to try to assist the poor.
This is why there was such a strong overlap between Bernie and Trump supporters - Bernie ditched traditional race-based rhetoric and attacked the problem at its source: class. Trump's entire campaign was sticking it to wealthy elites and bringing jobs back to disenfranchised classes. They were giving the same message, just presenting very different means to achieve the same goal.

I think it's that due to our current system, Republican and Democratic candidates cannot win unless they purposely try to polarize the vote. Trump one because he forced some seemingly extreme Right winged views whereas Clinton came off as too moderate. Next election democrats will probably try to come off as even more extreme, and so will republicans. It's the only way to win an election anymore.
