Was mensa when younger. Stopped paying membership fees after realizing it was 90% autists and social rejects who were really good at problem solving and math. If you want to find people who you can feed design ideas to bounce theories off of it's a good group. Otherwise, its pretty fucking meh.

I was tested recently, because high IQ was one of the possible free passes to college. Now mensa is spamming me with their magasines and application papers. I'm not very social so I decided I wouldn't pay just for an e-mail domain and ID card.

I'll be honest, I actually got the first question wrong. When it said a,d,g,j, I answered "l" instead of "m". I thought it was referring to the layout of a keyboard.

I called it a free pass because although I had to pay mensa about $8 for the test, the college has accepted me for free and without hassle. But you are right the whole process wasn't completely without expenses, I also spent money on a transport to the place where the test took place.

I don't know if it's exclusive to my country. But one of the mensa social clubs is called "club nihongo". Now don't tell me you aren't all worked up to join. Honestly, I can't even imagine the amount of sheer autism that has to be present on their meetings.

I have an inkling that everybody who's smart has self-reflected and gotten curious at one point or another, and probably tested. But anybody narcissistic to join a club or parade around online test scores probably isn't as bright as the guy who learns "Oh I have an IQ of 134, that's neato." and goes on to have a successful academic and professional career without ever so much as mentioning it unless specifically asked.

He is not entirely wrong. I think that IQ in itself is just an indicator. If you have high IQ, your brain is likely well developed and thus there is a good chance your brain posesses other immeasurable qualities. If your IQ is low, there is a good chance your brain is shit.
IQ gains value when it's applied to bigger masses of people because it averages and therefore pretty much eliminates these propabilities.

The logic ones fucked me up.

I passed on National Test Day when I was 21. I sat next to two alleged math wizards from prestigious douchebag university. They found out i was at a big state school and laughed a little. Like it was cute I had wasted my money to show up. By the time the oral half of the test started, looks had changed and all three of us could tell they weren't making it. At the welcome party I realized I was the only one who'd made the cut from my test location. Felt pretty cool. Go to party. Get treated like an outcast by EVERYONE. Probably around 30 members in public setting. As I work my way around the room EVERY single one of these fuckers say 'Hi' then look at me, say 'prior evidence' and give me a look of pity. I didn't pick up on what was happening until the 3rd group. Scrappy looking dwarf lady smiles, nods, says fucking 'prior evidence' and rolls her beady little eyes. At this point I've had enough and, in the most booming assertive voice 21 year old me could muster, say 'No, I just took the test!' They all stared at me like like I was an alien. No one spoke. It's weird to have a group of 10 strangers simultaneously look at every inch of you. Eventually the sloppy mouse found her confidence again. She got up the nerve to as me about C++ programming. Apparently it was her thing. I said I didn't know much about it, it wasn't my thing. Naturally, she made a decided it was some huge deal and my lack of expertise in the area rendered me less than. The whole thing was torture. One highlight was Egon Spangler lookalike. Actually approached me talked about fun stuff. His dad was big deal psychologist working on new study emotions or senses or something. So thankful he had the nerve to approach me and start conversation when everyone else was intimidated (or repulsed by tall, 21 yr old, hottie) to be decent or welcoming. One of the biggest regrets of my 20s was not going when he invited me for ice cream. But the mouse-troll was going and I just couldn't take anymore C++ shaming

Am I smart or dumb? Seems to me there are a few common ways they complete sequences and If you learn off all the ways these kinds of tests do that, you could increase your scores on even tests you've never seen before by a lot.

that's how I feel. I dropped out of highschool when 10th grade started because my family got me hooked on drugs and we went homeless. I'm just wondering if people who have good educations score well as opposed to those who didn't. For example I didn't know about square roots for the first couple of questions, but now that I do I can see the pattern. I think it's more about the way you perceive things than an actual measure of smarts.

I'm pretty sure there's a simple learning algorithm you could construct that will answer 99% of all IQ test questions reasonably easily.

The problem, is that you need the hardware and mental speed and acuity to "Run" or think about that many things at once that are all inter-related without forgetting parts, misassociating parts, failing to intergrate parts properly and ultimately having to waste time reconstructing a logical structure over and over again because it's disintergrating as you think about it and ultimately get frustrated and stop attempting to properly solve and then using a heuristic in its place.

I know what you mean, the sequences in q19-q22 are actually split in half but I thought they were 4 in a row sequences and couldn't figure them out as a result.

I scored 132 on the official mensa test. I was very nervous, because my college entrance was at stake and I barely managed to get there in time due to the weather. The supervisor lady told me that I've answered pretty much all the hard ones and most of my mistakes were on the easy ones, so I should take the test again sometime and there is a good chance I'd score higher.

I'm doing well in college so far, I even aced some of the harder mathematical subjects. I have a friend that scored 149 and he fails in pretty much everything. He isn't even able to grasp a simple concept of linear transformation or form a reasonable mathematical proof. And my second friend who fails at IQ tests is better than me in pretty much anything including logic.

Having a low IQ does not necessarily makes you "dumb" and vice versa.
