Hi, INFP reporting in sir. INFPs include Tolkien and Kierkegaard. INFPs are the best types of artists. INFPs, myself included, go between the "hermit mode", which you describe, and also just a goldy state of being which is hard for me to describe. INFPs are generally not the leader type, like you say, but they are more likely to be a supporting type, like the Shaman or the religious person. INFPs are mostly women, too.
I've known INFPs, they can be seriously brilliant people, as well as creative. They their own space/time for their brilliance to show. There is a reason so many creative millenials are dirt poor and never really get their name out there. They want to be creative and explore their minds, and like all types, want to strive towards their own subjective greatness. Even though logically it would strongly benefit them, most of them whether by choice or not even knowing OF the choice, to build a solid financial foundation, which would allow them to network, by better tools, fund ways to get their work out there... basically fund their 'cold start' to getting their name out into the world.
All types have their unique strengths, and INFPs are no exception. They just need a specialized environment to thrive.

Semi-addressing your question, all types have their place in society. Unfortunately we never got an operating manual, and its really up to us to decide how to allocate people where.
Without a doubt some types are completely incompatible with others, because of fundamental clashes of perception of the world. The other side of the coin is people who matching dominant/auxiliary functions, whether its thinking or feeling, tend to naturally "synchronize" with each other. That's why feeling type people generally only hang out with other feelers, and why rational 'robots' prefer to hang out with other robots (said with the utmost respect, as I'm a robot). People naturally want to avoid collisions and friction. Besides, things get done more effectively when everyone is collectively on the same page.
