Again, in some areas and during certain times only animals were a source of food that was available year-round in sufficient quantities while being relatively full of necessary nutrients.

Vegetarians and vegans do not have to count calories, the stomach is the best gauge of nutrition. When one eats purely unprocessed plant-based products, it becomes next to impossible to not have proper nutrition. Human tastes are also developed in the same way, there is a reason why nuts are almost irresistible to the human palate.
