Can somebody please explain to me why we ever became allies?

Can somebody please explain to me why we ever became allies?

The jews.

To fuck up France and Spain

Ye be sailing o'er cloth of colour.

But we be sailing o'er cloth of black.

Fuck Spain.

the enemy of my enemy is my friend

THAT'S NOT THE UNION FLAG

WHY DO I KEEP SEEING THIS FUCKING FLAG EVERYWHERE GET IT RIGHT RREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!1!

Thes

And the friend of my friend is my enemy

portugal was the right kind of ally - the one that doesn't get into trouble at every oportunity
england was the right kind of ally - the kind that has no interest in portuguese lands

things eventualy got sourer after the age of sail, but the general idea is that

Came here to post this.

Basically England was for Portugal what France was for the United States, they helped them gain their independence from the Castille (one of the two major spanish kingdom with Aragon) during the late Middle Age.
After that the alliance lasted during centuries, reactivated during various wars and notably when it came to colonial interests (particularly against the dutch) and the Spanish Succession War.
The fact that Portugal was guaranteed by England is in large part the reason why it resisted the powerful castillan kingdom for so long and a large part part of british colonial success is explained by their collaboration with Portugal which pioneered the concept of colonial power (that's not the spanish contrarily to what is often believed).

The alliance culminated during the Napoleonian Era with the Blocus Continental (basically preventing the british to do commerce with the continent in order to break english crown which bankrolled pretty much every countries making war to France).
Portugal escaped the french conquest and was your only harbor in Europe
Also the entire history of England foreign policy revolves around trying to put the french, the castillans, the germans and even the russians (with the murder of the Paul Ist for example) against each other.

tl;dr If Portugal exists it is thank to England and if Britannia "rules the waves" it is thank to Portugal.

That's the first Union Flag.
Why are we flooded by underrage since a week ?

U WOT M8?

Frogbro sums it up nicely.

The first Templar nation, we sweat shit and blood to be free from Spain and Islam.

And England was the only one to recognize this,

FIfth Empire when?

We recognised it because it was convenient. Our purpose was to maintain the balance of power on the continent and Portugal was never not a good tool to do it.

We recognised it because it was convenient. Our purpose was to search the horizon and be free from Castille and England was never not a good tool to do it.

You were actually friends. Forget the pink map shit.

Enjoy your tea.

Napoleon and Colonialism.

If you're tired of our migrants, just send them back, we're deeply ashamed every time one of our diaspora decides to turn to a life of crime or economic parasitism.

If you're complaining about Mourinho, however, sorry, no refunds.

I'm not aware of any problematic Portuguese migrants.

This is basically true of all alliances. It's mutually beneficial.

In practicality, at least in the beginning, we were a pretty good duo. England was very good at long range, and Portugal was exceptional at short range (Lusitanian fencing). We barely used bows in our history. Or shields, for that matter. The Portuguese fighting school used a Sword and a Dagger, dual-wielded like an autist, kek. Pretty efficient, though.

No, it was before that. England helped with the Conquest of Lisbon and we've been friends since then, even if only officialised in 1385 with the Windsor treaty.

We sent those to France, or: "how to make two countries better at once".

Those two countries never became allies, England and Portugal did.

to crush Spain and France.

It is, just not the union flag of the UK.

We still love you Portugal, sorry if any of my brothers are shitposting about you. Uber allies until the end

poortugal was too poor/weak to be a threat to the glorious british empire - that's the real, cruel truth they don't want you to know

we were always good servants too

Ash was always cool, though.

Because of mutualism of the events and threats at the time, which resulted in a long-standing friendship. God bless you, Portugal.

So if a crocodile eats your enemy, he's your friend?

Is there any other country that says hello with a rethorical "All right?". We also use "Tudo Bem?", but I don't know if other countries do it. I wonder if we got it from each other.

The English Empire started like 150 years after the Portuguese one, mate. We were ruling the waves in 1450 already. After 1580 it was all shit for us, but we held our own up to that point.

During the Iberian Union a lot of our sailors and officers defected to England. The guy who wrote the pirate code was a Portuguese, for instances.

When we realised we had fucked up we basically threw it all in the air and said "might as well England have it". Certainly wouldn't want the Spics or the Dutch to have it.

>they helped them REgain their independence

Fixed. by the way, Great text, French bro.
