Why doesn't Britain seem that nice compared to most Germanic countries?

Considering Britain industrialized first in the world and overall is by far the largest scientific, cultural, philosophical, etc. influence besides possibly France on the Western world since the late 1600s or so, why do I get the impression that it doesn't seem like a very nice or happy place relative to much of the central European Germanic countries or Scandinavia?

Shouldn't they have been able to far technologically outpace and out-modernize most of these countries with their accumulated wealth and achievement, to become something closer to a modern utopia than any of them? What went wrong? Is it all entirely a consequence of WWI, WWII, and post-WWII imperial dissolution?

Britain is deinudstrialized, it relies on finances. It is way less productive than France or Germany

but thats gonna change in two years time

The Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway are probably just as, if not more deindustrialized than the UK and still seem like nicer, happier, more economically equal countries though.

dude, them nordic countries have the highest suicide rate in the world

That's not true though.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate

Besides, suicide rate doesn't seem like it would be the most accurate gauge of happiness/unhappiness in a country, it's so relatively rare that it can't effectively be extrapolated to an entire population, not to mention how many unhappy people don't kill themselves.

Idk if they are as industrialized. For instance Norway is capable of producing rocket systems for military purpose. Sweden has Volvo which is big enough for them. Scandis didn't have their Thatcher who sold Britain out

as deindustrialized*

I refuse to accept that Wales and Cornwall are shittier than Northern Ireland.

How much of that company industry/manufacturing is done intranationally though? If we count just companies as examples of industrial prowess than there's plenty of British industry:

Rio Tinte, Ineos, Anglo American plc, Rolls-Royce, Johnson Matthey, etc.

>Is it all entirely a consequence of WWI, WWII, and post-WWII imperial dissolution?
Yes. We spent all our money beating the damn Reich into the ground and then you and the Russians nicked all our stuff and rebuilt Germany but not us.

>Most of UK is "More developed"
>Was born in one "Transition" region
>Grew up in another "Transition" region
well at least I'm not fr... wait, Cornwall is "Less developed"?
Isn't that meant to be full of hippies and surfers and that famous chef who does fish n chips?

Half of Cornwall has zero percent employment during the non-tourist season

That's just the character of the British people, we're miserable sods living on a miserable wet sodding island

Britain is shit

im talking percentage of population not by multitudes of 100,000,
The population (as estimated by the World Factbook in July of 2014) of all of the Nordic countries combined—Denmark (5,569,077), Finland (5,268,799), Iceland (317,351), Norway (5,147,792), and Sweden (9,723,809)—is roughly equal to the population of Texas.

Wtf how is western Slovenia a "more developed" and eastern Slovenia a "less developed"? Is this based on GDP per capita?

its the poorest place in western europe. But BEACHES AND THE SEA!! So nice xD !

percentage of population is analogous to rate per 100,000. Their suicide rate isn't disastrously high or anything like you were implying.

>live in a "transition region"
So... a mostly agriculture-based local economy means less development?

>Flanders/ Wallonia border

Holy shit why can't we be dutch already?

They tend to be much less wealthy, have less access to modern amenities, entertainment opportunities, high-quality infrastructure, etc. Although overally considering how shitty city life can be and how awful a lot of the people who live in cities are their actual quality of life and happiness/enjoyment may be higher.

>im talking percentage of population not by multitudes of 100,000,
you're joking lad aren't you?

Lost our empire, the elites took the ultra capitalist meme too far and all the manufacturing, mining etc went overseas, rich avoid tax placing heavier burden on middle and working classes, heavy investment in armed forces and nuclear arsenal instead of infrastructure and housing, money and talent drain to warmer countries and carribean tax havens, channel island tax havens, degenerate pleb low iq underclass genetics and culture which hold back millions from developing themselves and community, alcoholism and drug culture, benefit scam culture, mass immigration, atheistic communist society with no ideals to strive towards and no meaning given to life, grey and raining most of days, minimum wage can't pay for rent, rental jews buying up all the real estate, aristocrats own large swathes of land that won't be developed, corruption in local government especially towards embezzling funds for big engineering/infrastructure projects etc etc...

>tl:dr Britbongistan is a mess and Brexit probably won't even begin to fix the problems here.

> degenerate pleb low iq underclass genetics and culture
How can this be so universal or endemic though? I mean it's the same country which per capita has produced by far the greatest amount of scientific, technological, engineering, cultural, philosophical, etc. achievement in the entire history of the world. The genes haven't had time to sufficiently change and become fucking shitty garbage in little over 100 years, WTF changed?

What the fuck Portugal?

>nearest town has next to nothing to do aside from a nightclub
>shit tier roads, main roads are bumpy and full of potholes, roads around farming communities are pretty much dirt tracks come November
>local public transportation is semi-reliable at best, a car is an absolute necessity
Regardless, I'm happy and I have a good job. Wouldn't want to move to the cities tbqh

Good work user - we want to keep the secret of our happy island to ourselves.

Never would have thought i lived in a yellow zone. Please end my life.

for the vast majority of history those activities were relegated to higher castes, plebs gonna pleb, Britain always had a history of high social stratification

>seriously implying that north Cyprus is as developed as free Cyprus
ahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Heavy welfare state, collapsed standards, rampant materialism, heavy anti-intellectualism or leftist pseudo-intellectualism, government control and repression, cultural and allowed political view of Britain as a union of 4 distinct nations with values from shared thousand years of history into the new view of Britain as a generic "nation of immigrants" whose values are "being nice and polite all the time" and who must blend and castrate our history and grovel in apology for the empire and our perceived colonial guilt, wholesale replacement of chunks of the population by Pakis, Indians and blacks, preferential treatment for Pakis and blacks over natives, to the point that Paki paedo rings are barely prosecuted but asking a Paki about terrorism is punishable by jail time. Take your pick.

Ireland is pretty developed and outranks Britain in the global innovation index.

Calling Estonia less developed. The East is the future of Europe you know. They export to Germany. They don't have a shitty services economy, but an actual producing one.

But they'll fuck it up with entitlement programs of course, so not biggy. Hail Socialism.

Cornish pasties bru

To add to several good points made already, I think our environment makes us depressed. the UK has been way overindustrialised and urbanised, and there are far too many people relative to the size of the country. Our public services are slammed. The remaining 'countryside' is just boring fields and farms mostly, there are barely any forests or wilderness any more, and you have to travel really fucking far out from anywhere to get some peace and quiet

Are there at least attractive or traditional or wife-worthy women left where you are? Not dumb slags?
That's great and all, but are you implying that at the moment Estonia isn't actually less developed?

SOON SASANNACH

west of ireland - developed region. been to western poland with more developed towns and cities.

This.
Britain, it was the first economy to switch at 100% to services, there are few industrial remnant but they are immediatly predated by americans, germans or asians (same thing in France, for example Alstom was basically robbed by americans thank to their pawn Macron).

Protectionnism can't come soon enough.

All the scientific, cultural achievement etc was undertaken at times of colonial expansion or total war whereby the reigns over the creativity of individuals were loosened in order to advance the agenda of the nation.

In the modern day relatively peaceful post WWII era the government agenda in the UK has been to create a placid population under complete control and watch of an all powerful government and where people turn in their fellow citizens for thought crimes.

There has been steady loss of upwardly mobile and gifted individuals to America, Canada, Australia, NZ and other more exotic locations from the UK for a long time, leaving more and more low iq, low ambition genetics here.

Its just people's attitudes. You can enjoy the rain and the soft light when you accept that this is how it is here and stop dreaming for a spanish summer.

The overindustrialised and urbanised part applies mainly to England where 50 million people living in that one place is difficult for the surrounding nations to comprehend. How are you going to cut the numbers? I'm hoping that we deport people en masse in the years following brexit.

>and then you and the Russians nicked all our stuff and rebuilt Germany but not us

??

You received THREE times the money Germany did, per capita.

After Germany had been completely looted by - including you. German industrial facilities which could not be confiscated were blown up - up until 1949. And the Germans actually were made to pay most of their Marshall Plan money back.

From '46 to '07 Britain had to repay the Marshall plan £250m every year(bar3), whilst Germany/Italy/Sweden etc got a free pass, all the while creating and paying into the world organisations like IMF, world bank then EU,ECB and the rest, Any spare money went on flagship projects like Concorde or developing militarily when other countries got a pass.
We were starved after the war , rationing lasted till the mid sixties(longer than any other nation)
Our politicians sold out our older generation and emboldened by the response proceeded to give out passports like sweets.
We have a chance for change, but I'm not holding my breath, its the newcomers who get the prizes now.

>German industrial facilities which could not be confiscated were blown up
Not true , we magnanimously gave west Germany the keys to VW factory, the rest is history

Looks like the first victim narrative really paid off.
