Do you know what the real irony is? Even his enemies talk about how brave and competent the German military was, and even France's own allies ridicule Frenchmen as sniveling cowards for doing what perhaps demanded the most bravery.
Let's compare France in 1940 to the last days of the Nazi regime, shall we? By the summer of 1940 a significant portion of the French army, which had been sent to the Netherlands in an attempt to protect it, was cut off from the rest of France by rapid German tank action. This left an outnumbered and outgunned army in the south that was quickly outmanouvered and Paris taken. What Pétain realized in that moment was that a French victory from that point onward would be impossible, and that fighting when defeat is inevitable is a waste of human life. He tried to negotiate a peace that would leave France semi-independent, and would then work hard to protect the French Jewish communities (though at the cost of foreign Jewish communities, I'm citing Zemmour on this). Not because he believed this unethical source of extra manpower would swing the battle in his favor, but just to delay the inevitable a little longer. This is the greatest act of cowardice of not only the war, but of the entire early 20th century.
